Searched the forums, but never came up with an answer.

1. What prevents people from buying HL2 through steam, downloading the game, then passing their account info to a friend so he can download HL2 and play the game?

2. Do you have to be logged onto steam to be able to play the single player HL2?

3. What happens if my internet connection dies? Will I still be able to play HL2?

Hope someone can clear these things up for me.

You can play half-life 2 or any other steam game as long as the entire thing is on your comp and the computer it is on is logged into your account. You can play single player in offline mode, and yes more than one person could play single player from one account at the same time. If your connection is out, as long as you didnt logout of steam when you exited, it can run in offline mode.

That sounds really confusing to me, so If you need clarification, then I will try and explain myself better.

#1: Those people can't play online (at least) at the same time. The other guy also can't play it on his own account.

#2: No, Offline mode will work probably. When you exit, just click Exit not Exit and Logout, otherwise you can't.

#3: Yes. (if you do above)

Nothing at all and it is apprently legal too. However, you won't be able to log into your account while your friend is playing, also meaning that you won't be able to play MP together on the same account or while one of you is in SP

No. Steam now has an offline mode

Yes. Steam now has an offline mode :p

Yeah, see, I'm so out of it, I should have done it like you SubKamran! :D

Chris, me and my bro can use Steam at the same time...he can play one game while I can play the other. You should clarify that...people CAN be logged in at the same time :) Just can't play online.

I believe all that was said above to be true; although, I believe it will be the cause of numerous complaints from those without an internet connection at all, but luckilly, since they have no internet, they won't be here spamming the forums. :)

Yah, I don't know how it will work if people can't even get online to make an account :O

Last time i tried logging in to Steam without a connection it just said if i wanted to start steam in offline mode. So if you gave ur account information to a bunch of people and had them all go into offline mode, they could all play SP, and you could play SP/MP. Not a bad idea really...

Thanks for the replies. Clears a lot of things up.

Don't you think valve will lose a lot of money (more than most games) due to people who are not interested in multi-player just using another account to download the single player?

Seems like a risky move.

It's likely that will change.

This happens with everyother game in the Industry. People lend them to there friends and they just play the single player. With steam having an offline mode, I see no way to prevent this.

The more restrictive they make it, larger the number of people
who will circumvent their protection, and with every new generation of "cracks" to get around it, it will become more user friendly. Therefor, they are shooting themselves in the foot, for once it becomes so easy to get past it, it will become widely spread. I know this from my own experience, for I have just gone out and bought the game because it would be to much of a hassle trying to be able to play it for free.

If they were to leave it as it is, they would make more sells then they might have if they hadn't.
