HL2 'suddenly' won't load up

Sorry if this has been posted before but couldn't find it when seacrhing.
I have recently gone back online after 6 months without an internet connection. I went online briefly to register with steam when I first got the game then it ran perfectly in offline mode until now. I have updated all drivers and steam and reinstalled the game but HL2 it won't now go further preparing to launch hl2 screen. Have I missed something in my internet abscence? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

yep including all the cs source and deathmatch files which weren't before. I don't have sp2 but I didn't have that before. Isf this is the prob can I work around it somehow?

Hmmm, try validating your Steam files. It's in the options there somewhere. Steam's updating just now so I can't check where.
