I have seen that this was a common problem when the game out.I am using the DVD version and I have tried copying it a separate folder on the desktop as well as updating Steam before I install.I am also installing all HL1 source,Hl2 Source, and CS source at full.I have had no luck.Does anyone have a good suggestion how to get around this error?I just want to play the game ..sheesh

I can magically tell what your error exactly is, and i'll also magically work out what specs of your machines you have.

Try opening a support ticket with valve also.

Every person who has had this problem had neither updated steam or has an "incompatible" DVD drive.

Hmm

Thanks for the help.I am going to try installing this game again for the last time.I already had Steam updated. If the DVD rom is not compatible it would really suck because I took back the 5 dics set of Half Life 2 just because I was receiving the same error most were getting about a cab file already.I just hoped if I got this version it couldn't go wrong. This is what I get for trying to get back into games..::hmph:

Hang in there buddy

Mate, i had the exact same problem when after not playing the game for many months (damn account screwup :flame: ), I attempted to reinstall my 5 disc retail version. After receiving errors 1334 and 1335 on discs 2,3 and 4 and reading countless threads offering solutions all I can say is to persevere and try this.

I found trial by error to be a frustrating though eventually effective method. After letting Steam update itself and around 15 installation attempts later i finally got a succesful install. It sounds ridiculous but for this successful install I:

1. Let steam fully update itself
2. deselect install cs source
3. deselect allow icons to appear on desktop box
4. Install
....Which results in hl23.cab error on disc 4
next time round i went through steps 2-4 but this time i selected cs source to install
It also helps to change drives.
I couldn't beleieved it when this worked.

even though you have the DVD version i hope this helps, needless to say i'm not going to uninstall half life 2 in a hurry :D

Cheers

Well I went and returned the game just to see see what I already knew would happen.I got another DVD and it gave me the same errors.I tried everything you mentioned and then some....:flame: this stinks...Oh well, I tried..

Maybe you should try downloading through steam... if you have the interweb.
