Breifly, what is the difference between the 'Source dedicated server' and the 'create server' that is on the front page of the HL2DM front screen (I've tried serching on the tinternet for info but haven't found any)?

I want to set a server up so that I can play with a friend. The source dedicated server is very jumpy with the physics, i.e. unplayable - why is this? The server that is run from within HL2DM runs fine but doesn't seem to give any info on IP addresses. How does this work? Do I just give my mate my IP address and get him to connect to it?

I have a 256K upload (1MBPS download) on my ADSL connection.

AMD XP2600
1 gig Ram

I'm not sure but when you do "create server" you need to be in that server yourself. When you host a dedicated server you dont have to. That's the big different.

A dedicated server is when a computer runs only the program to allow clients (those running the actual game) to connect.

It doesn't have to deal with rendering the game, or running it. All it does is allow clients to connect and interact. In HL2/source's case it manages persistance of data, such as server-side physics etc.

The "Create Server" that you refer to is actualy called a 'listen server', because as well as you playing the game it listens for requests of other clients to join your game.

Yes, give your friend your IP address (having created a server in the game). Make sure you give him your external IP, not your internal one (only worry about this if you have a router and your IP shown is something like 192.168.x.x).
