Im worried......because of a certain delay back in september i think hl2 may not sell a large enough amount of copies to allow hl3 to be what it could be

It's a bit too early to think about HL3.

HL1 was delayed at least three times and one of the times it was because they scrapped everything and started again.

It didn't do it any harm. Clearly.
