Okay, here's my ranting 
Valve has set up a box with either a well-done fake or an old, outdated and still pretty useless version of the source code. They either stage a hack of it, and spread it through someone working for them [i.e not a real hacker, just someone posing as a wannabe nobodies-ever-heard-of--me script kiddie] and then posts it on the internet. That or they leave it on an unprotected box because someone has been hitting them fairly often. The story spreads, and the whole thing is a huge publicity thing. They get to delay it more, more people are interested. People think the company + HL2 is going down, but then they fight back and chuck it out and everybody cheers.
The only reason this isn't likely is because of the MAGNITUDE of it.. FBI, media everywhere... The FBI could be a 'friend of a friend told me the FBI', and the media could be misinformed [what?? lies!] and assume its the LATEST part of the code, when it isnt. The main thing is Gabe would be downright lying to us
