I was going to most this in the general area, but it has nothing to do with HL2. Anyway....

How do the mods tell which threads to lock and which threads to delete? Lately I've been seeing a lot of both happening, but I don't notice a pattern of action.

Repeats, spam posts, etc.

It's all common sense, mate

Edit - and for repeat threads, I guess they pick the most informative

They have rules and guidelines given to them by Munro.. and I guess they use common sense..

But common sense goes either way. I was wondering if they have a code for deciding whether to delete or lock. See, I have nothing better to wonder about while I'm doing shitty chem homework and waiting for HL2's release.

Yeah.. I'm sure there are guidelines posted in their secret Moderator Board

I know, we are good. We follow rules that are layed out to you in the ToS and in the stickies posted on each of the boards.

I'm curious what made D33 erase the "we are pawns" thread?

After a formal complaint, he put it back.

When I see a thread that seems odd, my Moderator Sense start tingling in the back of my head...
If I feel the need to bash my head into the keyboard to scratch it, the thread goes. If I just use a pen to stick inside my nose to try to scratch it, its a lock.

What's more powerful than a Mod?
ADMINS!
What's the difference between a moderator and an Administrator?

A Moderator is insane and thinks he rule the world.
An Admin KNOWS he is insane and rule the world.

Well, it's not exactly written in stone, but I tend to lock threads with a message to fend people off from making another one like it. I delete threads that are multiples of a thread that's already been locked, maybe with an addition of a warning.

We're given a set of rules and from that point on we remove any thread that edges on those rules, as someone else said - it's mainly common sense.

Moderators are all different though. One might let a thread go and then five minutes later another moderator will lock it. Each moderator has a different tolerance level.

If I close or delete something and some guy pm's me with a mature and understanding attitude, asking me to restore it then 9/10 times I will.

However we've gone a bit loopy with the closing / deleting of threads recently because there's so many doubles, spam or just plain useless ones being posted all the time.

It's a nightmare ;(

 thanks, that clears it up for me.

Basically, as Abom said - we tend to close a thread if we think it will help show people that the type of thread isn't wanted, and hopefully it wont be posted again. If we just deleted all offending threads, people would never know that the first thread existed, and go and post something similar.

Also, sometimes threads will have some useful information in, then degenerate to flames, or spam, in which case we'll close it, allowing people to still see it but not post any more.

It's mainly just how the individual moderator feels about the thread - if they think that closing it is more likely to help out, then they will do that.
