How do I open the console and use it?

How do I open the console and use it? I know this sounds easy but I don't know how to do this.

In the options menu, select keyboard and hit advanced. Tick the "Developers console" option. Apply and ok, then go into the game. Then press the tilde key. Its one key to the left of your 1 key, under the escape key.

i´ve done like you describe it. But the console don´t appears in the display. so what can i do? or is there a mistake? i´ve a german version of the game.

the tilde key only works with english keyboards, for whatever reason.

open your hl2/cfg/config.cfg, look for

bind "`" "toggleconsole"

replace it with bind "F1" "toggleconsole".

now you can open it with F1..of course you can bind any key you want..
