How do I set up an internet server?

I have been trying to play online with a few college friends, but we cannot figure out how to host an internet match; every time we do Create Server, the server is only visible on that person's LAN, and since we are all in different states, that's a problem. We've been searching everywhere and were more than a little confused to find that this doesn't seem to be addressed anywhere! Can someone please help us? We never can get a group game in on a public server without others interrupting.

how long did you wait?
sometimes it takes some time for it to show up.

if it doesnt work for you then you and your friends can download a program called hamachi.

it is basically like running your own lan server and anyone connected with you on hamachi can see the server in the lan tab.

once you created the server, type "sv_lan 0" w/o the quotes in console. it should work, just make sure you have your ports forwarded.

if you dont want anyone interrupting, you can password your server by typing "sv_password passwordhere" in console, and your friends can join it if they know the password.
