How do I use a .gcf File???

I have a .gcf file that is supposed to have all of half life 1 source in it but i have NO CLUE as to how I'm supposed to play it!!!
Am I supposed to extract it all somewhere or something??;(

open it through steam lol thats the only way to play any source game

3. Click games -> Activate a product on steam

oh and FYI, the HL1 files are more than ONE .gcf. Its many many folders and files.
