How do you change the words of the game to english letters instead of simplified chinese letters? You don't need Steam just to change the words right?

what do you mean "letters in the game" like the text in the game menu?

This should work.

-> Right/Left-click on your Steam icon
-> Go to Settings
-> Click on the Language tab
-> Select English from the drop-down list

Can I change the text in the game options or something without using Steam?

Pretty much you can't, since you have a Chinese version. The content of the HL2 DVD is all Chinese. I don't think there is an inbuilt English version.

That "without using Steam" question really bothers me. You all know why.

Buy HL2, dawg.

If you've got it, there's no reason for you to try doing it without Steam.

Maybe he borrowed the game from a friend?

Dont make accuse unless you have proof.

If you own Half-Life 2, you're running it through Steam, unless you've got some obscure Chinese version I've never heard of. Zoidberg, he still needs to use Steam to play, whether or not he's using a friend's copy (he'd have to do so in Offline mode, which still is Steam).

If you don't own the game and you pirated it, get the hell out of here.

Acually, you can buy HL2 and download a hack that disables its need for a valid steam program.

And what version did they sell in China if not a Chinese version?

Don't push the issue, this is something most don't want to talk...not because we'd like to just bury it, its just that it has been done to death before.

And at first I'd assumed some git had set his Steam language to Chinese. D'oh!

BTW is it possible to get the other dubs of HL2 just by changing the language in Steam? I'd really love to play HL2 in French or Russian or whatever it's available :)

Para, it was sort of a joke. Unless the subtitles and dialogue and even textures with writing on them have been created for different countries and languages, then you can't simply change the default language and expect miracles. But then, you'd know that.

Even then, they don't do a 100% complete job in most cases. I once saw a Doom 3 French version speedrun video, and I could still see and hear traces of the original English.
