Well considering we have done a great deal of "time travel" (Gordon is actually "sleeping", or something close to it) already, and Alyx is already our partner in crime I wouldn't be incredibly overwhelmed.

I think the overall purpose of Gman putting Gordon into stasis is to protect Gordon untill he is needed again, think about it. If you dont accept Gmans contract in HL1 you will be faced with a battle you can win. so the alternative to Stasis is dead. so Gman makes sure he is kept safe, until Gman needs Gordon to do what must be done in Gmans eyes. in ep1 Gordon goes another way, protectet by the vorts, Gman is not satisfied by this and tries to find a new way. then When alyx gets the "package" from the citidal he sees a new way to do whatever he wants.

(this is most likely to get Gordon and Alyx to the Borealis, but when Eli's is killed by the Advisors, they gets his kwowlegde and now know what the humans wants to do, this is also Gmans plan i think. afterall he tells Alyx that she should tell her dad to be prepared for unforseen consequenses

About foward in time? I cant really comment until after EP3 lol, I need to know how the story will progress in that to make an assumption. If it did happen then so be it.
