How'd Eli get out of the citadel so dang fast?!

OK, this may have been answered before, but I'm slow and just noticed it.
after the "showdown" in the Citadel with Dr. Breen (HL2), Alyx and Gordon run after him and destroy the teleporter, killing breen and destroying the dark fusion reactor (or whatever it is).
In E1, Eli and Dr. Kleiner are already at White Forest when they Alyx hooks up to them and decides that she and Gordon will have to go into the core.

So what the heck happened? Was there some big pause of time between destroying the teleporter and Alyx finding Gordon in the rubble?

Mossmand and Eli escaped using Breen's escape pods. That, or the Vorts rescued them. There's 8 hours approx between destroying the teleporter and getting out of the rubble; but that makes no difference because the Dark Fusion explosion took out Breen's office anyway.

They used one of Breen's escape pods. It's in the cut dialogue which should have been kept in because otherwise it makes no sense.

You know, the Vort thing is odd. If they can teleport people about why can't they rescue captured Vortigaunts? Do the bands prevent them from doing so?

Probably they used an extract for doing such work, as well as the effort of every vortigaunts. It is too expensive to rescue others through such means.

The singularity explosion distorted time and space, allowing both the Vortigaunts and the Gman to intervene.
