I want to preload the gold version of HL2 but I only have 200 meg of downloads per month. Is there any way to copy the files from a mates HD? Will Steam accept the files?
If anyone has had any success with this please tell me.

It is possible to burn cds/DVD with the GCF files from the Steamapps directory. Just make a note of the directory path etc you're burning the files from. Then once burned, copy em into your steam directory, viola - should work.

Its been confirmed by Valve that it is legal to copy and transfer these files, as authentication is done online through steam.

Hope this helps

My god! 200Mb? Never heard of such a low cap.
Why do you want to preload so badly, when you have to go trough extra trouble for it?

your ISP sucks major ass.

get a real ISP, they obviously dont want your money. Hell, the full SP2 install was over 250mb.

they dont deserve paying, tell them to fek orf.

You should be happy your not in Austrilia.... with 56k then...

waylander5 You could ether:
Network the 2 computers and copy accross the gcf files in steam apps.
or burn the files to dvd and place then in your steam apps.

Understand that if any more preload content comes out after u get these files you would have to get it as well. (This could be another 500 meg?) Your best bet is to buy it in shop this will most likey require no internet connection to play as i dont think you would be playing online

I want to preload because the value of the $U.S. is so low! (No offense) The Aussie dollar price for the gold edition is $120 which is only $20 more then the price of standard edition retail. Well worth the hassle in my opinion.

Just burn the following files:

How much hard drive space is required for the Half-Life 2 and CS:S downloads?
Note that these numbers will change with future pre-loads and updates. They are current as of October 1, 2004.
º 1034 MB - base source shared materials.gcf
º 458 MB - base source shared models.gcf
º 972 MB - base source shared sounds.gcf
º 57 MB - base source shared.gcf
º 3 MB - counter-strike source base content.gcf
º 939 MB - counter-strike source shared content.gcf

From Steampowered.

So don't forget the smaller files too.

you have to buy retail, or switch ur isp. 200mb dl's per month? i do sometimes up to a gig a day. how the hell can you live on that, AND pay for it?!

If you have to burn them on a cd, use winzip to split the files to 640MB (or 700MB if you've got 80 minutes cd's).

Splitting files in winzip is a piece of cake. If you don't have winzip (OMG?!), type "winzip" in google and download it. It's free!

And I recommend to zip the files because those gcf files are uncompressed -> it will be a lot smaller in a zip file.

I dont have a couple of those... Im assuming its from the cs:s Beta... because I have preloaded all the content and Im missing:

º 57 MB - base source shared.gcf
º 3 MB - counter-strike source base content.gcf

in fact Im certain those are CS:S BETA files, because my other pc that I played CS:S beta on, still had them.
