I read both Half-Life Source and hl2.net and the frontpage articles on both are completely conflicting.

HLR/HLS says that they have confirmed that Vivendi wants to push it back to Fall. And they said they had Gabe, and the Valve staff recently (I don't listen to HLR so I wouldn't know if it was accurate or not)

But HL2 (whom I hope are right) has people from Valve saying it's going to be released this summer.

So who am I supposed to follow? HLR/HLS with Fall or HL2.net with Summer?

Or does it come out in Winter just to make me even more confused? :|

Always go with HL2.net, HLR radio is a grab bag of information, to say the last ;)

By the way, welcome to the forums :D

I've read them for a good amount of time, but never had much to say. Thanks for the welcome. :D

As for HL2.net, I hope so too. Don't want to start a flamewar though.

This is the situation:

HLR/S read CNN and a number of other publications/news broadcasts stating that Half-Life 2 will be finished in a number of weeks, the gold master sent to Vivendi for replication all for a release in Autumn/Fall.

We don't like posting news from third parties, so I decided to e-mail a Vivendi representative to ask him if the claims that CNN etc. made was true or rumour.
They e-mailed me back being very tightlipped about the whole thing. The way we interperated this e-mail is that if they're being so tight lipped about everything and trying to keep specifics of it underwraps then there's no chance that Vivendi told CNN etc. anything.

We're not claiming that HLS/R is lying like they same to think. We're just reporting the news as we interperate it.

The same goes for all readers of HalfLife2.Net - just interperate the news however you want.

But HL2 (whom I hope are right) has people from Valve saying it's going to be released this summer.

Actually, in addition to that, they also quote Vivendi saying that they have not set any date: including a fall date. Now, that could be true, and yet they could have also somehow implied that fall is when they expect HL2 to come out, and the news sites picked up on it. We don't really know how all these things came into various news reports. But at this point, everyone, even Valve, is just estimating. All sites can honestly do is just report the news that they get from the best sources they can find, perhaps add their own opinions to interpret and personalize the news, and then let fans decide for themselves what information to believe or not.

And also, everyone could be right. Valve could truly expect to be finished during summer (as in, up to Sept. 21st) while Vivendi expects the game to be out during their fall season (which, maybe, they count as starting on Sept. 1st). Who knows. At this point, nobody really knows for sure, and it doesn't pay to start a war between all the HL2 fan sites.

No, we need to all be unified in order to combat all the other new games gaming fans. :)

Thanks for emailing them, Chris. And you're right, if you ask me. Why on earth would Vivendi tell CNN and such that they want to set it back to Fall.

That's just silly.

But also, they haven't said for sure it wasn't. It'd be so nice if they just said, "Hey. Here's the day. It's not going to be accurate at all, but it'll make you feel better."

Heh, you think they want us to "feel better?" Just the opposite: they want us drooling crazy for the game so that he will buy it up like hotcakes. Better buy two, just in case!

Ah, so you say. Just wait till its released, then we'll see what happens to your interest. :)

actually, i'm also loosing interest in a daily basis... this not meaning i won't buy the game of course (that would be retard)

What would you prefer? a hell lot of screenshots revealing pretty much a bit of everything or wait till the game is released and get amaze yourself?

Bungie has pretty much given away everything about halo 2, I'm actually loosing intrest in that as there is only gameplay, story and A.I to look forward to (which hopefully bungie doesn't screw up). The new screens pretty much give you an idea of what to expect from Multiplayer.

Oh, I bet there is plenty in SP Halo2 to look forward too. Nobody knew squat about the flood in Halo1, and that was a pretty awesome addition that radically changed the battle gameplay.

True, yet it's the MP of halo that gave the long life to the game. The new screenshots reveal some maps, it's not that they aren't intresting but they have the same features: hidden secret, particular destructable environment and the infamous inside temple style which we are so aware of from halo. I really hope the make some killer original MP map - the ones I've seen aren't particular worth looking forward.

Personally when the game goes gold is irrelevant, as its ultimately down to the publisher as to when it will hit the streets. Vivendi wont have entered into a deal with valve to publish/distribute HL2 if Valve can distribute the game before Vivendi. It doesnt make financial sense, remeber it will be Vivendi that pays for the marketing etc.
The games industry is traditonally slow in the Summer, with Vacations, Olympics and general summer things going on, so although I believe it will be finished by valve during the summer, it wont be released until September. Also bear in mind that other graphics or handware partners could be found to promote the game as a reason to upgrade to PCI Express based systems. Lets not forget its all about making the most money.

Not on this project. Valve owns the game, almost certainly they make the call. If they tell Vivendi that they'd better get production moving so the game can ship ASAP, that's exactly what they'll have written into their contract with Vivendi. Valve holds most of the power here.

The same should be true in ID's case?, or is Activison funding the game?

as soon as HL2 is gold vivendi will start manufacturing the CD's asap.

you dont make money by sitting back delaying the game when its already finished.

wich is why HLR's news is BS.

The best advice is not to accept anything as fact until there's something officially announced on the official site, or confirmed (and those confirmations verified) multiple times by members of Valve. Release estimates aren't worth listening to until the game has gone gold anyway (even official dates), so just sit tight until then. Some websites love drawing attention to themselves by making proclamations of truth that they can't prove... It's my oppinion that Half-Life Source (and HL radio) is a crap sandwich, but we won't go there ;)

The only thing that confuses me is this line in their news post:

"We have been right on every report so far to date."

I dunno. We only know about Valve because they said it so many times: we own the game, we funded it with all our money, etc. If companies don't tell us these things though, there's no way for us to really know: it's all internal finances and NDA contracts and stuff.

Yeah, same here. My Internal Lie Detector went off the scale :S

after the September 30th fiaso, i don't think fans will get anymore release dates from Valve (that goes for HL3 as well) until at least the game goes gold.

hmm.. u know i wonder sometimes.. what if Valve kept HL2 a secret until this year's E3 instead of last year's.. certainly the wait would be shorter.. and i guess perhaps less of the "hatin' on Valve" that seems to happen every now and than.

You know, I always wondered what it was like at a vendor like Vivendi. I see conveyer belts of CDs with lasers running over them. But I figure it's something completely different.

Publishers don't duplicate the CDs themselves. They contract it out, along with most other aspects of the publishing process.

Quite. There's a reason they call it "pressing CDs".

That's not how a corporation sees it, Dougy. They tend to time product releases to financial quarters. Now I don't know what the deal is between Valve and VU as far as who has control over what; all I know is if the debacle over CS:CZ is any indication, it's totally possible that HL2 will be released when it's more fiscally advantageous to VU. Which may indeed prove to be in the fall quarter.

I don't like it any more than anyone else here, but that's how corporations work. Still, there's no concrete evidence that the game isn't still on target for summer, so don't abandon ship just yet.

:afro: :bounce: :afro:

Well considering the Valve guys, themselves have told us that HL2 is still on track for summer i'd say HLR is posting news based on a journalist's speculation alone. And who started saying HLR/HL2.net sucks? Last i checked it was just an average forum user and not an admin like Munro

[Devil's Advocate]They stuck to Sept 30th too, right up until a few days to go, before they informed us that the game wasn't ready[/Devil's Advocate]

But before Sept 30th they hadn't finished the game

Yes. I'm getting fed up with people bringing that up. Valve made an error of judgement. They don't HAVE to make games for us lot you know, but they do so because they want to but only on their terms. If the game isn't ready, it isn't ready so won't be released. It wasn't ready on September 30th (the reasons for which, DO NOT MATTER). The game WILL be ready soon and you'll get your reward but I just wish those impatient bastards get their game last (hmm, 2005 say?).

grrr :flame: :hmph: Why I oughta....

Edit: I used that quote in agreement and I wasn't flaming it (as much as it looked like it).

I know what u mean, man. Its getting annoying. Sure Valve made a mistake in the past, but u gotta remember, everyone makes mistakes...

I hate Valve! Shit, the game has been finished for one year now! Release it already!

PC Zone previewed Condition zero when it was supposed to come out.

it got like 60% and they said that it certainly wasnt worth the wait.

game gets mysteriously pulled for several months and everything PC zone griped about had been modified or changed/added etc...

they tried to throw out a unfinished version an realised they would get lampooned, so they done an emergency over hual.

they didnt just sit on the finished game for months on end.

Yeh but then again, who really cares what rating games get if you like them? I for one enjoyed CS:CZ and still do.
