Theres a big difference between a modder and somebody who can manipulate source code. You would need to be highly skilled to use their custom made source code and it would take years of work to produce a game from it by which time a newer better engine will have been produced.

The big deal is the licensing side of it. It must be tempting for developers to just have a quick look thrugh the code and learn from it. I'm sure they would know what their looking for pretty easily. Then it becomes a bit like writing a report from doing reasearch . In other words all you have to do is change a few words here and there and you dont get accused of plagiarism.

I think the Unreal engine was licensed out for like $700,000 at a time, so imagine the Source engine!!

Your missing the bigger issue. The point is will anyone buy that source engine license now that they know the source code is out there for all to manipulate.

It would probably do a lot of game developers good to learn from Valve's work.

Sure, this isn't an ideal scenario, but as you say it would take considerable time and effort to incorporate various features of the Source engine into other games, and simply "copying and pasting" the code is likely to raise suspicion (Valve could, through taking legal action, could get a third party to investigate the developer's source code).

However, if game developer's read through the Source code in an attempt to understand it and learn from it, then I forsee an increase in the quality of games.

Stryyder: good point, but I doubt that many respected developers would use a stolen copy of the code instead of paying for a licence.

Thats not what I am saying I am saying that a developer might pass on the source engine and buy another one because source as been compromised while the other one has not been. I am sure it would be a part of the decision making process.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Thats what i was implying that developers will look trough the code instead of buying it.

Sorry , nother headcrab here :(

Does this mean basically that the engine supplied in the leak is Under gpl now :/ ? Thus free to use (not that i want too :( ) , So no legal action could come of it ?
