check out the full e3 2004 video , at time 10:22 the guy beside gordon on the left is trying to shoot the strider with a rocket launcher, but the tree is in the way and when he shoots it nothing happens to the tree at all. i thought it would break or something. its not a big deal though , just something to talk about

Well Valve never promised fully destructible enviornments, so I would'nt be too surprised.

Another mess up that gets to me: When Gordon is climbing the ladder to get up to the magnet crane in the new e32k4 video, he doesn't take either of his hands off the revolver. It'd be kinda hard to climb a ladder with no hands...

well, that's kind of sad, really, i mean they said you could set bulildings on fire in non scripted sequences, so why should a tree blow up, or fall down, i mean you can freaking chop a tree down in the second serious sam!

Who cares...It's better, like other games, it takes forever to get up latters...

i'm sorry, but that just seems nit picky, if his hands were really simulating a ladder climb then he would have to re-draw his pistol, and what if there are enemies waiting for him when he's done climbing?

Have you even played Half-Life before?

Wow, i'm not complaining, i'm just saying that it looks kinda funny.

it'd also be hard to take 50 bullets before dying, but they like to call these things GAMES.

Omg And Theres Not 40,000 Different Kinds Of Guns! And Wtf Why Cant We Have Fluid Water Physics? Omg Hl2 Doesnt Have A Dynamic World Where Everything Is Like It Is In Real Life? **** Half Life 2! And Holy Shit Did You Notice In The E3 Vid You Cant Destroy Every Pixel On The Screen? Goddamit **** You Valve

May I suggest Turok II : Seeds of Evil to quench sir's lust for appropriate ladder climbing? And to be honest, it's some pretty mint ladder climbing to be had there.

Let me tell you guys this, being a programmer, I wouldn't want to code an engine where every tiny thing is destructible. I mean, why in gods name would someone bother for a tree? There will be tons of trees in the game, and if every single on was destructible, well, call another Half-Life 2 delay! The game itself is fine, I see no problem in a little tree not falling down.

I agree, that was the best game of the series. It didn't do much for innovation, but the environments were great.

Wooooo. Funny stuff right there; feel like I just got off a thrill ride. I agree completely, the reason HL2 isn't perfect is b/c no game will EVER be perfect to everyone. The game would never be released if they heeded everyone's demands for this and that until the game was undistinguishable from reality. It's just the way it is...

*In reply to guinny, of course*

relax man , i said at the end of my post that it wasnt a big deal , but i am just saying that its a tree , like tree's will be used a lot in the game and in mods , so they should be destructable when shot with a rocket launcher.

another thing i wanted to mention is in e3 2003 half life 2 was really unique and looked soo diffrent from other games , it just stood out . but now a year later hl2 has some games to compete with ,coz other games are taking the same ideas with physics and stuff , so for hl2 to stand out more it should have more stuff that r destructable.
dont get me wrong i cant wait for this game to come out , just my opinion.

He was seriously ripping the piss.

One would think trees would be an obvious thing to make destructable.A bit dissapointing, source seems to be the same as farcry's engine.Lets hope the story and interaction aren't. :bounce:

I'm Pretty sure that the enemy accuracy was toned down for the E3 vids...

Good grief, you people amaze me sometimes. Every object destructible? If you want that, go buy a rocket launcher and shoot some real trees. Meanwhile, I'll be playing video games, fellas.

This one time, I climbed a lader with out letting go of my revolver. So STFU b1tch

I bow to you, my super-human friend.

haven't any of you played the original Half-Life?

trees would be stupidly hard to simulate in a game.... if you wanted them to destruct properly... theyve got leaves, all roots n stuff and random branches with diffrent thickness etc etc.

all that crap would have to be modelled into source so it knows how to make it look realistic if its destructed(?). it aint a simple metal pole or wooden plank.

having some sort of crappy animated destruction for the tree would quite frankly look stupid and not fit in with the rest of the physics in source.

That...or it wasn't a tree...but rather a figment of your imagination....yes.........lets go with that one....

Ugh guys you do realize this is in alpha?!?!?!? I mean for christs sake stop bitching about a game you haven't even touched yet :O

And no I'm not like directing this at the topic starter but at all who are like "omg hl2 is teh suck" cause damn it's better than far cry by far cause i would love to see crytek do 1/3 of the most advanced stuff source can do unscripted..... (im not dissing crytek cause its a great engine) and come on destructible objects tend to look like shit anyways and it would require shit loads of CPU power and the like.....

About the ladder, ever play HL1 (like someone was saying before me :P ) cause im sure they just havent gotten around to that yet.... Not a big deal!

argh butt pirates

...maybe gabe is one of those"save the forest, eat all burgers that you can, weight 300 pounds, lets make the same game with a new engine and we double our multimillions swiss accounts"loonies...

I would hope it would catch on fire, but RPG's arnt really meant to start fires and...
Wait, I dont care.

Just remember, if you WANT to make a mod with fully destructable terrain with the source engine, you can. Its already possible in other games. Soldiers: Heroes of World WAr II has practically 100% destructable terrain and its a blast. The only thing that doesnt deform to a huge degree is the ground, but it craters nicely.

I think it was done for a reason not to have it be like it in the half-life 2 game... but it is possible with the technology, easily so.

h0w lam3 it should br3ak. gabe said wood will act like wood now we c its bullshit. i c now very few things will break in halflife two. it will be about like halflife one with regular boards breakable when they need to be broken and nothing else. lame.

He'd say "look ma, no hands"...or probably he can wall walk like the prince in PoP.

BTW - while we didn't get to see a destructible tree,we at least got to see a tyre on the rope moving frantically - which took away my concentration.

I can understand the guy's complaint. I mean, hitting a tree with a rocket launching and it should at the least scatter a bunch of leaves and maybe smolder for a bit. With everything else being represented so accurately, an indestructible tree can take you out of an immersive trance faster than Gabe can say,'3 Happy Meals please.'.
