The Mods are telling you to re-purchase it from Steam. They have no direct affiliation with Steam; so they would not benifit from your actions. The best way for you to fix you problem is to get the Steam version off of, guess what, Steam. Its called help.

If you have a copy of HL1 with CD key you can register it on Steam and have the latest Steam version which will fix your problem. You do not need to buy anything.
