Invalid CDKEY!??!!?

Okay, my friend bought HL2 at London Drugs the other day, got home, installed it, eneterd the cdkey and it says invalid. Okay, they return that one, get another copy and it still says the key is invalid. I thought perhaps he was typing it wrong, but he says he tried many times on both keys. I've heard of this type of thing happening on the steampowered.com forums but they are down alot because of traffic. Help here would be hot but im not sure what you can really do... hmm strange.
P.S. Got to Ravenholm in the first 5.2 hours!! So dreary....

You are 100% correct,

thats why when a game first comes out , go and buy it at the first day and early in the mornin.

Nah it says the cdkey is invalid not in use, and they "said" they just got the shipment. I just read the other thread here about that and it looks like the last string of numbers is the cd id or something?

Tell him the CD Key is the first 5 groups of five letters.
The 8 or so on the second line of the sticker aren't part of it.
So just take the top line and try.
I had the same problem, once I realised I felt silly :/

Your friend is typing it wrong. He is including the CD number. Only type the numbers on the first row of the CD key.

It should be xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx DON'T include the numbers beside HALFLIFE 2 on the second row.

Or maybe someone opened those boxes and recorded those cd keys. You gotta really make sure that the box is still factory sealed before you buy it.
