On Friday July 11th, 2009, Ireland passed the Defamation Bill by one vote. One of the aspects of this bill would make it illegal to criticize religion… any religion under penalty of fines up to 25,000 Euros. That is the equivalent to nearly $35,000.

holy mother of god!!!
ireland is just went on my "forbidden" list.

What if a Christian claimed that if someone was not saved through Jesus Christ, he or she would spend eternity in Hell? An argument could be made that such a statement and even the Bible itself might be considered blasphemous to other religions. In fact, most religious are blasphemous to other religions. Maybe the Irish police will fine everyone.

good point

Oddly enough that isn't part of Catholic Doctrine, since Vatican II iirc.

I give this bill 6 months to a year at most before it is repealed.

Pandering aside, there is no way this thing can stand up to the harsh reality of everyday discourse.Either the Police (Gaurda or whatever) would ignore it because its unenforcable or start fining everyone which would see a public backlash that could only end with the law going the way of the Dodo.

Yeah, this sounds like some of the idiocy that we have created in the US too like laws that make it illegal to photograph CAFOs (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations) or save seeds if they were the genetically modified ones from companies like Monsanto for fear of patent infringement. Lunacy is rampant and why? Money.

I was handed out one of those stupid mass-produced postcards that you're addressed to politians. It's anti-this law and it has a quote from Life of Brian on the front (a film that, I might add, was banned in this country for a time) and I think I might actually post it.

I guess this is to prevent the Catholic Vs Protestant Octagon Fights from spilling out into the streets

Except the conflict was never about religion per se, it was about cultural and ethnic identity and (initially) civil rights and oppression.
