I know there are a lot of other editors out there for making maps and such, but is there a way for me to make a map in a program I am familar with (3D Canvas Professional) and have it work with HL2/CS:S? If it is possible how do I do it? What kind of program would I need to convert the file into whatever format HL2/CS:S uses?

I'm guessing its not possible, but I figured I'd ask.

Thank you for taking the time to read and resond to my question!

No it's not really possible. There are a couple of things you can do in other editors (such as Quark) but you can't do everything. And you can't make a map in a modeling package like 3D canvas or 3dsmax. The only thing you can do with those proggy are models. There was a program(plugin) for Max that let you build the basic geometry of your level and export it to Hammer but it doesn't do much.

So if you want to build a map for any Source games, you have to use Hammer.
