Is this real?

The top one appears to be a photograph while the bottom one appears to be a screenshot.

The fact that we're having to question which is which REALLY shows how great this graphics engine truly is!

WOW these really look great yeah i think their real

I think the top one is half ingame, half photo. The bottom one just looks like average pretty-damn-amazing graphics.

These are ingame photos, i understand they look realistic - but think logically, amongst all these ingame shots, why would they sneak a photo in there?
Plus, you can tell it's not real... look at the stoney ground, and that wall to the right of it... it's just not real. Very beautiful shots though, impressive stuff.

It's a photo, 100%. I know it's hard to differentiate between HL2's graphics and photos now - thanks to phl's article.

If someone would like to tell me why Valve there would be a screenshot that's half a photograph then please do.

I think this is a case of low resolution making a more believable image.

The top one is a photo. It is not an in game screenshot. Look at the buildings windows (satalite dish maybe) If you think that is an in game screenshot....your....wrong

The bottom photo is concept art. It is not in game because it appears kind of fuzzy because of the art medium used to draw it.

Case settled. But the in game screenshots looked gorgous.

I can understand you thinking the right of the image looks like a photo, but what about the left?

First is photo, second is artwork.

The reason that they've mixed these in with screenshots is they intended to compare the in-game screenshots against the things they were modelled on and inspired by. I gather these were part of a presentation on the artists' work.

I think it's more that some peoples' ability to distinguish reality is questionable, rather than the graphics actually being that good! They're very impressive, but certainly not *real*. :p

Hmm, I agree that the background of that picture looks like it's a photo, but the left of the picture doesn't. Look at the ground and the walls of the building. It doesn't look real. Cover up half the picture and you'll see.

It doesn't help that Planet Half-Life have just posted the pictures with barely any explanation. It would be better if we could read the entire presentation.

Some of those appear to be photo's or concept art or something, but even so, HL-2 has amazing graphics. I actually think they've built on the graphics since September 30th!

Some of those screenshots appear to be location research done by Viktor Antonov.

Agreed.

They are both photographs!
The second one is placed next to the rendering! Meaning its a photograph!
