John Carmack Interview.

mm, interesting link.
thanks for the find.

Pretty interesting. I've never seen some of those screenshots, are they new?

Man, this guy asked some really dumb questions. Most of the questions on the first page were answered in the first answer.

Excellent read. Man, Gamers have so much to thank for Carmack being around. It'd be very interesting to see what Games would be like without him.

Very true!

so that mega texture is that instead of using diferent textures they use one big huge texture to the whole map?

Basically <RJMC>, the best thing about it is no more ugly tiled textures on distant mountains or up close on cliffs etc...

I noticed that too, I'm guessing the questions were all sent in at the same time instead of a live interview.

I love John Carmack's detailed explanations :)

Same here puts thought into this interviews and work.

If you look at a game and you make it look better, it’s a better game, so long as you don’t impact the gameplay negatively. So it’s nothing profound and fundamental, it’s just one tiny little aspect of graphics rendering that’s just better now.

Not for me you don't. To make a game better you need better gameplay, I'm sorry graphics don't mean better games.

Non tiling textures is nice, but it certaintly isn't a buying point in my books.

Kyo, Carmack meant that as long as you don't change the gameplay why not add something in that'll make it look better? There's no harm in that, right?

Not necessarily. Look what they did to Mega Man!

I don't agree that if you up the graphics, you up the value of the game. Look at all of the classic games for the 2600, the NES, arcades, Tandy 1000s, etc. Many have been remade and yet none of the remakes can properly capture the same magic as the originals. So no, I don't agree with him that upping the graphics = making the game better. That seems like a great way to hype his weird new technology....

he makes nice graphics engines i guess but i respect peeps like Kojima/Miyamoto/Ueda etc more tbh. Meh

I don't think people other than mappers will appreciate this fully, but it will be hugely noticable in the future to which games use it and which games don't, like Carmack said.

It's a pain in the ass trying to make a winding road/path using tiling terrain (when you want things like white lines facing the right direction), but with this new tech it'll just be painted on exactly as you want it in photoshop.

I'd rather have this than things like bump-mapping, so I can't wait for this tech.

Eh technology (in this case graphics) and certain game features go hand in hand.

Arguing against is a little silly.
