All you do is tell steam to start in offline mode and then use a crossed over twisted pair network cable

Yeah, when STEAM starts, and you click to play HL2: DM there will be a "create server" option, or something along those lines. Just use the UI to set up the server and tell it that it's a local/LAN server and it should run fine. Or you could download the dedicated server tool from STEAM beforehand and configure that in the same way. I think in HL1: DM if the server host wanted to play on the same server they were hosting you had to change the port number. 27016 worked well, if I recall correctly. I'm not too sure if this is the same with HL2 though, but it's just a heads up.

Yes, you can play HL2DM through LAN in offline and normal Steam modes (I take it you know that HL2DM runs seperately from the main HL2 game?)

I used the default port when running the Source dedicated server for HL2DM (27015), but the game was sporadically laggy for the host PC user. I couldnt get HL1 working at all with the dedicated server, maybe I'll try using the same port number...

one other thing: most of the time, the sv_lan command is usually set to 0 by default...that means any non-dedicated server created by someone is is LAN only... but you might wanna check to make sure that sv_lan is set to 0.

sv_lan 1 obviously allows gamers from the internet in contrast ;)

where is the dedicated server application available for download? On steam? Because i did not see it, then again ive only been playing half life for four days....

Left-click on Steam tray icon
Select "Games"
Select "Tools" tab
Double click on "(Source) Dedicated Server"
Install it
Have fun :p

Or you can use SRCDS

If he sets up a dedicated server he cant have a multiplayer game with only two computers...

Hint: Make sure the PC with the most MHz and RAM are the one that runs the game.

Why not?

because one of the computers is a dedicated server. and it means that it's dedicated to being a server, only

No it doesn't. Hence why I said about changing the port so that you can connect to it from the same computer. Sure, you don't have to do it this way. But it is a way of doing it which gives you more control over your server.

[edit] Just tried this now to make sure I wasn't talking complete crap, and you don't even have to change the port number to join a game with the dedicated server running on your local machine. The advanced UI that the Dedicated Server Tool gives you is really a very good way of setting up and maintaining your server. [/edit]

Are you sure? I thought 'sv_lan 1' meant LAN was activated?
