Somthing that seems to have been overlooked with all the shine of the grahpics and the immersion of the physics: The sound!
Playing cranked up to 11 on my 5:1 with sound quality on high, it truely is a fantastic experince: The howling of the unfortunate souls in "The place we don't go to anymore", the whine of the combine gunships, the beeps and voice fade out when you plug one of the combine troops, the excellent musical score, used sparingly and to great effect at key moments.
No wonder the game stutters a bit occasionally due to the sound - it is of staggering quality throughout and another reason on the list as to why HL2 is now the FPS to beat once again.
 to valve.
