i got the game yesterday
played it all night got to the hospital this morning
my computer began to stutter so i restarted it
loaded up ep1 and tryed to load my game but i had no saves other than the ones from last night

same problem to me. Purchased the game. Installed. Starting the game went smooth, while at the very beginning, when Dog digs you out from underneath the rocks, it started stuttering and freezed. Reproduceable all times. Looks like a slide show of 5 second snapshots. After several times of game reinstallation, directx and ATI catalyst updates, nothing's really changed. Finally figured, that game loads and level starts fine when catalyst A.I. ist turned OFF in catalyst control center AND all sound and graphic features are set low within the game control settings dialogue of Episode1's welcome screen. One can reactivate 'em subsequently after loading the desired savegame or starting a new campaign.
Well, however, this workaroung did a good job for the first time. After passing by the tier where Alyx grabs the sniper rifle to watch your back, this workaround doesn't help any longer.
This damned game just freezes either when the loading progress bar comes to 50 - 70% (varies) or 1-5 minutes after gameplay?!
What's wrong with my PC? It's not equipped with extraordinary high- or low- tech components:
