Let's face it: I suck.

I was wondering if I could find somebody that wouldn't mind taking a newbie under his wing. See, I played DM for the first time yesterday, and again today, and I do quite horrible, like 1:2 frag ratio at best.

I'm looking for somebody that could:

1. Make sure my keyboard set up is adequate
2. Make sure I'm doing the right basic things, like I don't know if it's good to auto switch weapons, etc.
3. Tell me basic strategy, like how I should move to make it harder for them to hit me.
4. Show me cool tricks like going in secret windows, etc.

I'm a quick learner I assure you!

You can add me on MSN: [email protected]

Thanks!

my first online fps was TFC, and i read everything i could get my hands on for it. just used google and tons of stuff came up. however, when i started playing TFC it had already been out for a few years, so there was already plenty of material on the web. but i find a lot of what i learned for TFC still applies to deathmatch. if you've never played TFC i highly reccomend it, even though the graphics are hilariously out of date.

just try google with deathmatch + strategy and start reading. after a while you learn enough that most becomes instinct.
i already found:

http://www.planethalflife.com/modcentral/basics/dmtips.htm

that's the older version of DM but alot will still apply.

good luck.

If your keyboard is the defualt WASD you are already set.

Though, you may consider having certain weapons bound to convenient keys. For example, Q = machine gun... you get the idea.

Other than that, just play untill you stop sucking.

Learn to use the gravity gun well and you will go far.

Objects in terms of bestness:

radiator > monitor > filing cabinet > table > shelving. Everything else after that is more or less the same. Of particular note are regular barrels and the laundry-trolley things in Lockdown - these are pretty useless objects, avoid them unless you can't find anything else.

As for basic strats - constantly keep moving and looking around you, learn to circle strafe. If you ever stand still, you're very easy bait for someone. So don't stand still and shoot at someone - move while you're doing it by circle strafing.

The table, if flipped over is big enough for you to hold and crouch behind it while walking.

Like this, you can either avoid fire, wait for your opponent to run out of ammo and then kill them with your gun, or you can just shoot the table at them, killing them.

Thanks guys, although I'm really looking for somebody to play in-game with me to show me the ropes of good play :)

Whatever, alot of people play with arrows, it doesnt make any diffrence what he uses.

Are you kidding? The regular barrels are great, if you have the accuracy... the trolleys, however...

Actually it does, using the arrows means you have to find keys around that to bind, and let me put it this way, waste of time. You wanna get skill? Start binding either the keypad or the letters, anything other than that is just useless. Anyone from hldm or op4 will tell you this, it helps you out greatly.

go play quake 1 DM or DMC, its an insanely fast DM. once you get good at that youre ready for any FPS game on the planet

The barells are ok, but they're not that heavy, it seems. Usually a sink or toilet will kill someone with a direct hit 95% of the time, while the barrels seem to only kill about 75-80% of the time because they're often in the wrong orientation/too light to hit someone properly.

Whereas the other objects I've mentioned usually don't have orientation problems (the shelving and tables can, which I why I don't like them much).

I second the motion

I just played a bit online, and decided this:

sinks/toilets-- long distance
barrels/trolleys-- short distance
tables-- lots of enemies, or low health

I use arrow keys and find that all I need is within reach.

But then again, big hands....

Yip, that's pretty much it. But the sinks/toilets also work at short distance, while the barrels don't work at long distance. Therefore sinks > barrels. And any other heavy things for that matter (see original listing).

I find with the tables you actually need a bit of luck for them to work most of the time - you need to be holding them squarly in the middle or end, if they're on an angle a lot of the time they just won't hurt/kill the enemy. Also you need to be in a large room, and have to aim high-ish otherwise they'll get caught on the ground and won't hit your intended target.

I always grab a filing cabinet if one is around (usually are) rather than a table, if possible.

NO nO nO.. get the rocket launcher on the roof and sit camp there.. killing everyone down below or near you in one shot. ><

Ahh yes, just got done and binded my other pc controls...soooo much better.

god... i have not been yet able to NOT kill someone with gravity gun :P

exploding barells are good :P but watch out for someone shooting it!!!

other than that... grab the magnum if you can, use some small-but-heavy stuff with gravity gun (big can be used as shields, but you don't see your enemy...)

and use WASD...

also... i feel rocket is not THAT useful since you cannot really easily manuver it on ground, and splash damage is next to none

make sure you know the layout of the map too, where to get hp, where to get armor, where to get weapons.

getting good at dm isn't really something someone shows you ingame, if you play a couple hours a day and keep the tips in this thread in mind you'll do aight

thats what i hate about the barrels and tabel and stuff-you cant see over them to see where the enemy is. Monitors and toilets and other small objects go pretty far and will hurt or kill most of the time
