Major Technical Problems with HL2

I have played through halflife 2 several times, the last was about six months ago. I recently restarted (last weekend) and for some reason halflife 2 is continuously crashing, I have no viruses, all of the specs are the same except my graphics card might be dying (the screen sometimes flashes black then purple and its not themonitor) I have a geforce fx 5700 256mb its real old lol. Any way any sugestions and if I need to get a new graphics (in your opinion) nominate some

When does this black and purple thing happen?

Can you play the game AT ALL?

Yeah i can play the game it just crashes randomly

the black thing happens mainly during company of hereos

the purple thing happens randomly for a while and then goes away sometimes i even turn the computer on and the screens purple

Do you have another monitor or gfx card around that you can use and narrow down the problem?

Yeah, those are signs of a dying video card. Try cleaning out your fan and removing all the dust that has infected your computer and video card with a compressed air blower (available at any self-respecting computer store) and see if it got better.
