Make custom Textures?

Does ne1 know a way of making some custom textures (i hav photoshop cs2) that can be used in cs:s? I've tried before, but they usually only appear as the annoying black and purple checker texture. I hav tried tga2vtf and making vtf and vmt using vtfedit, but thbey never work, sum1 plz help?

nvm, found an easier way tht actually works, jus use a normal texture and edit it (jus use ones you never use or ones from maps you never go on )
