First off just to clear the air I did play right through on Normal and finished the game before I started fooling around with the cheats.
I went to Black Mesa East. After the combine assault, Alyx and Dog lead you through the airlock and towards Ravenholm. In the part where Alyx runs ahead and then the roof caves in after her, I noclipped my way past it, and watched the Vortigons and the Combine battling it out in the room where you talked to Eli.... Damn those things kicked some serious ass, killing each combine in a single hit with their fully functional energy attack. They also ran over and charged up my H.E.V. suit inbetween attacks!
Looks like the combat AI is there, perhaps at some stage you were intended to fight alongside them? I suppose have both a medic and a vort with you would make you damn near invincible though...
