So I vaguely remember what the original HL manual was about. And I never owned a copy of Opposing Force or Blue Shift, I just borowed them from a friend many a years ago.

So may I ask, is there a place where I can find out what the manuals had in them? I heard one was of Adrian Shepard's diary?

I don't care if it's canon or not, I just wanna know what it said in um.

im sure someone can link exactly what is said but in the op4 one its shepards dairy from training camp which also makes a couple of mentions of the gman. and if i remember correctly the blue shift one has a letter welcoming barney to his new job? i might be wrong there...

Another typical hellish day at base camp...
I'll be glad when this is over and I can get assigned a mission. There has been this really weird civic spotted at the base. Rumor is he's from some government branch looking to recruit; other say he's with some secret research group. I would jump at the chance to join. It would be cool for the change and the adventure.

I finally saw the government guy today. I'm not sure he is a g-man, but he was wearing a really uptight suit and carrying a briefcase. He looked more like a lawyer or insurance agent to me. I did notice him checking me out. Several times throughout the day I spotted him just watching me during training.
I wonder what he's up to...

For weeks our drills have been the same crap day after day. Today we assemble for the morning run and our drill instructor tells us we have one week to become experts at indoor strategic combat. We will be spending every day this week at the combat simulation facility. As far as I know this is a specialized training not taught in boot camp. What I want to know is if this is to test our ability to adopt or we are being readied for a specific mission?
Time will tell...

March 12th
The rumors have been flying since our indoor combat training began. Most of my peers are convinced that we are being primed for a mission. No one can agree on what the mission is. I have heard the name Black Mesa Facility thrown around a lot, but I have no information about the place. The rumors are that some top-secret research is going on there.
Doesn't sound too exciting to me...

March 15th
The rumor has been confirmed. We are being trained for a mission at the Black Mesa Facility. All I know is that the place is being used by scientists who are doing some kind of new research. I can't imagine what we would be needed for. We were told today to be ready in case it happens tomorrow. I don't know what "it" is, but the whole thing is little strange. I kind of hope it doesn't happen; the mission doesn't seem to have much excitement potential. I'd rather hold out for something with more likelihood of combat.

TO: C. GREEN
FROM: LM
SUBJECT: ANOMALOUS MATERIALS REQUISITION
DATE: 05/11/200-
CC: DR. KLEINER
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ANOMALOUS MATERIAL GG-3883

After studying your substance evaluation report about samples returned from the GG expedition, the senior staff has decided to move forward with the program.

We are particularly interested in sample GG-3883. Although your experiments have revealed unexpected spectral analysis fluctuations with GG-3883, you've identified it as the purest and largest sample we have.

Therefore, the senior staff has decided that GG-3883 will replace EP-0021 in the simulation.

Note that we must deviate from standard analysis procedures in order to have the sample ready in time. We understand this is a violation of normal anomalous materials handling protocol, so I have already authorized the enclosed materials requisition form. Please see to it that that sample is ready to be delivered to Dr. Freeman on the day of the experiment.

Re: Offer of Employment

Dear Dr. Freeman:

This letter shall confirm a recent telephone conversation in which you were offered, and did accept, a position at the Black Mesa Research Facility commencing immediately but no later than May 15. As discussed, you shall begin at Level 3 Research Associate status, assigned to the Anomalous Materials Laboratory. We understand that it will take some time to conclude your affairs at the University of Innsbruck and return to the United States. Please notify the Personnel Department of your intended arrival time immediately.

Since you are unmarried and without dependents, you have been assigned appropriate living quarters in the Personnel Dormitories. However, you may not gain admittance to your quarters until Level 3 security processing is complete. Please bring this offer letter and all documents listed on the attached sheet to the Black Mesa Personnel Department no later than May 15. A retinal scan will not be necessary at this time, but we do require urinalysis and bloodwork to establish baselines for your medical history during your employment.

Please note that as a necessary condition of your work with anomalous materials, you may be required to wear and operate an HEV hazardous environment suit. You will be trained and certified in its use during the standard orientation process. A31 further questions regarding the Black Mesa Research Facility and your role as Research Associate will be answered during orientation.

As you know, Dr. Kleiner, your former professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, originally recommended you for contact by the Civilian Recruitment Division. He wishes to extend his congratulations on your decision to accept our offer. Like Dr. Kleiner, we are confident that your career with the Black Mesa Research Facility will be a long and rewarding one.
