Map Planning

There has been a lot said about planning maps...but mostly concerned with indoor maps.
With the increase in the number of people expanding into doing outdoor maps i am wondering, how do you people plan out interesting and unique outdoor themed maps?

-Know what kind of theme you want, such as in the middle of a big city, or out in a desert.
-Do some research on the type of terrain, buildings, and whatever else you'll find there.
-Put those elements together and see if you can come up with a good de/cs map.
-Sketch out the layout and write down descriptive ideas.
-Map it out.
