The looks of Paper Mario in a platform game - sounds all good to me.

New Super Mario Bros. (DS)

Old skool :)

It's been years since we've had a decent 2d Mario game, and now we have 3 corkers on the way

I just need Nintendo to hurry up with the DS Lite. Then I can't wait to play these.
Is Super Paper Mario out?

Speaking of the DS Lite, when does it hit shelves in the US?

The complete American Nintendo DS Lite launch details are as follows:

- The system will be released on Sunday, June 11, 2006
- It will retail for $129.99 -- same as the original DS is now.
- It will launch only in Polar White "with a raised DS logo."
- Additional colors will follow shortly after the launch.

Available in Australia on June 1st, at SRP$199.95.

I'll be picking up New Super Mario Bros. this week :)

Yoshi's Island 2 was a huge surprise, the original was one of the best platformers ever.

As for Super Paper Mario, I never got into the series as an rpg, i'm wondering if this still has any rpg elements or is it a stand alone platformer?

I own a PSP, but I'm grabbing a DS Lite for a close friend. Then I get the best of both worlds.

Oh i miss the old mario games....thank god for ZSES.

From what I gather it's a pure platformer. Check out Paper Mario 2 if you get the chance - it's a cracking game.

Wait up, what? June 11th? My friend has a dark blue DS Lite... right now. If it's not even out yet, then how the hell did he pull that one off? o_0

Perhaps an import from Japan?

Yeh, people have been importing from japan for a while now. If you do import and end up with a bunch of dead pixels you're pretty screwed - so i'd wait for a local release.

wtf is a DS Lite? one screen?

Haha. Yes. A "Dual Screen" cosole with one screen.

(I know it's actually supposed to stand for Developers' System, but shh.)

I'm supposed to be saving for the Wii and reading festival.. .but I want a DS Lite in time for my summer hols.

I know I already have a DS, but that is entirely not the point. :P

EDIT: SPM isn't truly 2D. Look:

And there is something seriously wrong about this:

Although not quite as disgusting as the beastiality implied in Sunshine.

I will probably get New Super Mario Bros. today. The game looks totally awesome. I'll post my thoughts on it once I've played it a bit.

Do that :)

I'd pick up a copy myself, but have just spent a crap load of money on a new tv.

I'll be getting a DS Lite too, Reginald. How can anyone miss on something that looks so cool? Hopefully there will be some trade in options for the original.

Mine's a bit shitted up on the outside so they better accept it back. Just general wear and tear. I hope it survived the rain today too.

The only thing I can say about that paper mario wedding is D:

The DS Lite is pretty awesome, so so much brighter than the old one, but fingerprints on the surface are a pain. And mine didn't come with any dead pixels, but it did come with a crappy adapter that wouldn't work, so I had to order a different charger.

Where you get your DS Lite from?

Wait they have added new gamplay elements have they, or is this just a prettier version of supermario bros 3.

Damn you SearanoX - i'm going to have to order this now!

QFT. But can I be bothered to import? Or shall I save it for the UK release when my friends get it too. If they're not too tight. :|

It works out at about £25 pounds incl. delivery. I'm a little tempted to wait because i'm half way through a few games at the mo. Gonna sleep on it.

Man, the last time i played a mario game that i really really loved and will remember for all my time was back when i was about 8 and playing my Snes with Super Mario World !

In the middle of doing Super Mario 64 DS atm, can't wait for these titles.

I've never owned a handheld myself. Although i am tempted by the DS Lite, and if i do decide to grab one then looks like i might have to grab this game !!

I got this game last night. I'm a few levels into world number 3. I'm enjoying it very much. It looks and sounds great. It took me a level or two to feel truley comfortable with the controls because they aren't quite as tight as the first Mario. This isn't a bad thing, just different and I like how the control feels now.

You have a large overhead map that has a path to follow to the castle which so far has ocasionaly diverged like Mario 3. You can open gates that allow you to save your game by spending the large coins you collect in the levels. This opens the way for 1-UP houses or powerup houses or different paths. There are floating "?" boxes on the main map in addition to hammer brothers that move around between "turns" that can help or hinder progress.

The way levels play are just like mario 1 and/or mario 3 complete with the mandatory flag pole at the end. Some levels allow you to move at your leisure, although you do have the time limit again, and some have a forced screen scroll. The bottom screen always shows your progress despite the level or map screen. You can store a mushroom, flower, shell, etc and touch the picture on the bottom screen for a quick powerup whenever you need it.

The graphics and the little touches throughout the levels are neat and I always want to keep playing to see what the next little trick or technique they use might be. The difficulty quickly went from very simple to a decent challenge and I'm only on world 3. Each level you are tasked with finding three large coins. At first this is incredibly easy. Later on you're lucky if you find 2 of the 3. Some levels I couldn't find any. The replay value should be significant.

I haven't played the mini games or mario vs luigi mode yet so I can't comment on those. My roomate has a DS and doesn't have the game yet, but I haven't checked out what's available with the Download play option.

All in all I'm really enjoying it. This is what video game playing is supposed to be like. Fun, quick to jump in and quick to jump out. Nostalgia for the win.

It most certainly is! (As I'm aware).
