During a press event attended by Game Informer, Microsoft finally, finally revealed just how much they're going to be charging for the Games for Windows Live and despite popular speculation (and hope), it's no where near free. In fact, the model rings in at the same price as a yearly subscription to an Xbox 360 membership: $49.99 a year ($7.99 a month, $19.99 for three months) for Gold, while Silver, as it is on Xbox, is free.

However, if you're already a subscriber to Xbox Live via Xbox 360, Microsoft won't be forcing you to shell out any more cash -- the subscription carries over.

what incentives they'll offer to pc gamers to subscribe yet remains to be seen but atm on sheer prinicple alone I'm not getting PC live; I'm not paying extra to play with xbox gamers

Paying extra to rape consolers, eh? Interesting idea.

Exactly what more features do you get if you pay, I mean if you can play what game you want with whatever name you want, isn't that good enough for most gamers?

Wow ... in addition to turning me off of their consoles they're well on their way to convincing me not to even bother upgrading my computer. If it gets to the point where I have to start paying a fee to play on servers that MS isn't even hosting I'm going to stop playing games on Microsoft platforms period. That's just something I refuse to do.

However I'm sure that MS will not be able to monopolize the PC industry with their ridiculous service like they have their own consoles. Alternatives will likely always be available.

I really don't see the appeal of X-BOX Live. I can turn my PS3 on right now and instantly join a 40 player game of Resistance. There is voice chat, online rankings and stat keeping, universal friends list, custom lobbies ... everything. It works flawlessly. Likewise I can use my computer to play a huge number of online games. This costs me nothing. Why the **** would I want to pay MS for the privilege?

It should be monumentally less expensive for what we're getting.

I think it'd be fun to see Sony come up with an alternative that was free. Then things might get real interesting.

Probably not gonna happen, but ah well, it's an idea.

Still, Microsoft wants me to pay so I can play people in Halo 2? No thanks. I like my multiplayer for free.

well for starters for the gold version instead of only being able to collect achievement points from the multiplayer (like silver allows) you'll be able to collect achievement points during the single player portion of the game

wow $49.99 for achievement points/cross platform play ..no thanks

oh and guys a Silver membership (free) allows you to play with other pc gamers ..a gold membership allows you to play against pc users AND xbox360 users

Well Sony's PS3 online network thingo is free afaik? As for PC - Sony platform gamingness with console folk. That simply won't happen.

Pfft "games for windows" that can play with console gamers, yeah your slogan sucks. Either way we see one or two things happening;

Console users get raped.
PC users get horridly nerfed.

Wow. WTF? I play most of my PC games with loads of other gamers all over the world and we never pay an extra cent beyond our ISP fees. This seems absurdly rotten. MS is really pushing their luck with this initiative imho.

I see this failing....
Really hard. Charging THAT much for the cross platform..guh? It's really cool, and people have been saying they want it..but not at $50. D:

Cross platform is great for people that have both xbox and a gaming-pc, but I don't see how pc-users that do not have an xbox are going to want this unless their friends use xbox for online gaming.

.bog.

It's just the big debate "Who is better at FPS, console or pc gamers" The war will finally start with actuall playing, not just rants. >=D

Developers have already conceded that the war is over and that pc-gaming "won". They don't use those exact words, because they are afraid to alienate customers, but when you admit that you have to nerf pc-users and/or boost console-users the case is closed.

I'm not going to pay USD 50 to try to prove that I am better even when nerfed... :p

If you let me into a GearS of War server or Halo server with a mouse and keyboard while everyone else has a controller, they will say I'm modding.

****. NOT MODS.

lol, i dont even pay for 360's gold service.
what makes them think that i will pay for the pc version of it?
i love my 360 but the service is a rip off.

This doesn't affect me especially since I have a 360 with Live so I'm good to go.

We've always known there will be a pay part of Live for Windows.

Anyway, I have a gold account anyway.

Oh Microsoft...

How many times do I have to tell you to fire your marketing and creativity department?

I also already have xbox live gold for my 360.
tbh, used it about three times, and aint been multiplaying online with it since. All you get is lag. I paid for lag. M$ really are ripping people off with live, you have to pay them so you can host a server/game on your internet.

I wont be playing cross platform when those games come along. I'll play against other pc gamers. And if the PC games get nerfed to make it fair on the consoler's then I wont play it at all.

Bad bad move Microsoft

There really isn't any reason to pay 50 bucks just to play with 360 users. The only people I see using the pc version of live gold are existing live users unless microsoft has something else planned.

ill just wait till they reveal all the other features, then ill decide..
