Mod help

Hey guys I'm new here. Anyway, I've been playing HL2 since it came out, and I decided I wanted to try modding for my first time. I can't get it to work though. I've read all the instructions and I found out that for some reason the txt file for HL2 is empty. Am i totally screwed up here??? Help PLEASE!!!!!

Sorry about that. First of all, I am using Hammer, is there an easier system? Second, I didn't mean the .txt files. I meant the .WAD files in the texture options. I read the instructions and went into the Half-life 2 folder but I can find no .WAD files on my computer. Also, I'm not totally sure of what I am doing, so there might be something else wrong, but I know that there is no .WAD file that I can use.:flame:

wads are used in half-life 1 are you sure you didn't read a tutorial referring to that instead of hl2? One of the nice things about hammer2 is that it configures all that stuff for you. Try opening up hammer and click on help or read the sdk documentation included through steam.
