I'm trying to follow the basic tutorial. I didn't see any characters directory so I couldn't make hostage 2. I went to humans instead and did male 2. When I created him he looks completely pink and with no features. What's going on?

well it sounds like your making a map for cstrike if you tried to put a hostage npc. and male02 is for hl2 so it wouldnt be able to find the texture directory.

I am trying to make a simple hl2 map. I ran the file "Source SDK" then ran the Hammer program. If I run half life 2 with Hammer I can see male02, but when I put him in the editor he looks black and pink. If I run it with cstrike I can see hostage2, but he also black and pink. I used snag it to take a pic and have attached it.

I am following the tutorial and made a room like it said and used the "make hollow" command at 16. He is still pink and black as you can see from the screenshot. This is my first time using the program, do I have to run anything else to install the textures? The builing also doesn't have any textures when I zoom out. I obviously installed the program cause I'm using it. I have a screenshot of both.

Your box is a wireframe yet the model is rendered? Fascinating. Click "Camera," then "3D Textured."

If you still don't see textures, blame Valve. This weekend's Steam update made several of my monitor textures appear checkered, too.
