I hope no one has asked this question before, I searched the forums and couldn't find anything regarding what I want to know. I was reading this article and it said something about people that wish to play HL2 multiplayer over Steam may have to pay monthly - $9.95. Is this true? If you wish to find the answer I'm referring to, go to the article, press ctrl+F and type in 'MMORPG' to go right to it. By the way, what does MMORPG stand for?

Been asked over and over and over and over.

Short answer is no.

Long answer is if you want to pay a monthly rental fee for *all* STEAM games you can do that INSTEAD of buying the game. (Although from recent emails it sounds like they don't have this set up yet and may not have it available until some time after HL2 ships.)

Pay to play: no. The $9.95/mo payment plan is a subscription to Steam that gives you access to ALL Valve content, past present and future. This payment plan is still in the planning stages, nothing is concrete. If you buy HL2 or any other Valve game at retail price there will be no additional charge.

MMORPG = Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game(World of Warcraft, Everquest, ect)

Most questions like these can be asnwered here:
www.google.com

it clearly explains it in the article you are referring. And mmorpg stands for massively multiplayer online role playing game (half life2 is a fps, first person shooter)

update:how does everybody manage to reply so fast!

I guess it was posted before. So by Steam content, does that mean every update patch of the game? Will we have to pay for that? That should be free, me hopes.

If I would have to pay to play I would not play. Besides if you'd have to pay to play only the hardcore fans of the game would pay, hence, valve would not get as many people playing online (or on steam). But if its free...EVERYBODY plays, making valve happy.

I don't think Valve has clarified if bonus content(like new levels) is going to be free. If they follow Microsoft's XBox Live lead(annual subscription required) then bonus content will be available only to subscribers...which would suck.

i had the idea that such bonus levels would have to be payed to be played... of course that would lead to nothing but warez mania...

All content refers to expansion packs, other source games (like TF2 which is a separate product from HL2), etc. Patches &c will be free as normal.

tbh, i dont think valve are that stupid. if they did that, there would be little to no people playing there games online. they've got what has the potential to be the most played onlne game [with mods anyway] of all time on their hands. do you really think that they would give that up, for the sake of a possible few more dollars.

Patches = free.

WOW, just crossed my mind: How crazy would that be if they charge you for patches? Bwahahaa! Sorry, if you want that crash to desktop bug fixed you gotta pay, buddy!

If Valve wanted to Kill themselves, then yeah, they would charge for patches...

someone saw a dollar sign in the text, read the number next to and with wildly unfocused eyes scanned around the article. This figure is relating to a steam subscribers fee that is paid so that you have full access to everything produced by Valve.

No full access to MP.

There will not be a pay to play option.

There will be an optional monthly subscription that will allow you to download all Valve titles and many extras for free upon their release. The full details haven't been finalised and judging by recent comments from Valve staff, it may not even make it.

So, its not an ongoing payment to play say day of defeat?

Hang on. So my options would be to either buy the massive delux pack, which has dl2, dod, cs in one bundle. Then thats all i pay if those are all the games i want to play correct?

But if i buy half life 2 on its own, then pay a monthly subscription, i can download dod and cs from there and play them. How does that work? I mean the dulux pack would be like $150. Wouldnt it be cheaper for me to buy just hl2 the game, get a subscription for one month, download all the xtra games then stop my payment.

Wait, so anyone who makes a mod for this game, will have to put it on steam, and thus, all mods will only be available to people who have monthly subscriptions?

urseus, if you stop paying, the games you're getting because of the subscription stop working, they go back to being "available games", rather than "my games". Having them downloaded is no good if Steam doesn't allow you to play them.

Mods made by 3rd parties won't be covered by the subscription, nor will full games on Steam made by anyone other than Valve, i'd imagine. It's more of a Valve subscription really...
