Is there any news on Multiplayer for HL2? I read something about subscription plans through steam? Will I have to pay valve to play the mods? Or is it going to be like half life where you can download the mods and play them without steam? Any info regarding this would be appreciated. I apologize I am sure this is a rather old topic.

No news on HL2's multiplayer..

There will be a subscription plan for roughly $10USD/month, but it's optional. That method lets you "rent" games instead of buying them, so for $10 a month you have access to every VALVe product, as opposed to dropping $50 for one. May not be the most viable option for most people, but it's a good idea (in theory) for people who want to give HL2/whatever else a go for a month and see if it's worth it.

As for mods, they'll still be free, unless the mod is good enough that they decide to charge for it. It won't be any different than it is now

You don't have to pay for steam, you won't have to pay to play either AFAIK. The only thing you have to do is buy the game (from steam, or from stores) but get the right copy. Half life 2 will have several versions to purchase, a single player only, a single player+multiplayer etc. Thats all that i know hope that helps..

Thank you both Shuzer and Innervision, that answers my question exactly. I was going to pre-order HL2 and I had heard some news that multiplayer may be pay for play, and in that case I would have got Doom 3 instead :), but I am going to stick with HL2 now.

Thanks alot guys.

that monthly steam subscription is going to be very tempting, if CS2 and TF2 are released around the same time as hl2

The thing that really puzzles me about the multiplayer is the havok engine. I mean...when you shoot a guy in the face (and he doesn't die) his head will whip back. Now, from the point of view of the guy you shot, his point of view should be at the sky/ceiling.. and considering that his point of view has a crosshair so should whatever arm his gun is in. So if you shoot a guy in the head his head and his gun arm should raise and point to the ceiling according to the havok engine as I see it. Unless will he's looking at the sky he gets to shoot you in the face even tho he can't see you acorrding to his head. This can kind of apply to the feet, arms and such. Shoot a guys shooting arm, and he won't see his gun nor for a brief period be able to shoot. Or if you shoot his legs, he'll bend down and look at the ground or his screen will tilt.

Anyone else think of this possible dillemma

also what does AFAIK mean?

Won't happen - everyone would hate it. There may very well be some mods that have it though.
