I was thinking about this idea for HL2 (haven't completed the game for those wondering) and obviously the replay value would go higher than it already is so i figured i get the general opinion here.

Would multiple endings be a good idea in ur opinion?
obviously its too late for HL2 but perhaps if the HL series does not end in a triology, than maybe we can see multiple endings in HL3..

thoughts?

Multiple endings for the middle part of a trilogy would be a logistical nightmare. I can see the start to HL3 now:

"Please answer these questions so we can correctly asscertain how Half Life 2 ended and therefore start Half Life 3 in the correct manner for you:"

Multiple endings with one possible outcome being the only way to advance ALA HL1 would have been better.

Agreed. Multiple endings in the first or middle part of a series is a bad idea normally. For instance, look at KOTOR 2. Since the first one ended in a variety of fashions(Spoiler: Good, love between your char and Bastila. Good, Killed Bastila. Good, Saved Bastila but no Romance, Bad, Killed Carth, Mission and Bastila, Bad, Let Carth, Mission go and let Bastila become your appretice, so on a so forth) they are now having to make it where at the beginning of the game, you have to answer a series of questions to determine how your last game ended. However, if they could make it work, it would prove for a more interesting gaming experiance :)

Thanks.

They should put that at the start of HL2 then. Did you accept the G-Man's job offer? Yes/No If No, you can start back on xen infront of 3 of the alien soldiers and about 100 cardboard cutouts and with no weapons.

hmm..couldn't that be easily overcome by breaking the start of the game down into segments.. so heres an example..

assuming HL1 had 3 possible endings.. then they can make 3 beginnings to HL2 and merge them somewhere along the way or they could do other things with it..

its just that in this day and age its hard to imagine a game developer having problems with multiple endings considering all the technologies the developers seem to be putting into the games.

oh well.
