I don't know if anyone has experience with this or can tell me more, but I would like to know if it is possible to use seperate profiles for multiple players on the same PC? I share my PC with my brother and we're both going to play HL2, we bought a Radeon 9600XT with coupon last year and I've recently added the HL2 code to my steam account (my brother doesn't have one).

My question is - how can my brother and I both play HL2 with our own keyboard and mouse settings and without seeing each other's savegame progress? I would really hate to see my game experience ruined by all the chapter names, which he already visited.

Can my brother create a new account with the same HL2 code on this computer, or not? It doesn't matter if we can play at the same time, since we only have one gaming-ready computer.

No he can't. I don't think the game will support profiles as games rarely do these days, for some weird reason. Jedi Knight had a great profile system.

Anyway, i guess you can just play when he's finished playing or vice versa?

you could share your account, just make a keyboard config, save the config file somewhere, and keep switching em when you play.

Somebody suggested saving games using different names.

Example

Save Game: Ravenholm_Blahblahblah
Save Game: Ravenholm_Mr-Fusion
Save Game: Traptown_Blahblahblah
Save Game: Traptown_Mr-Fusion

and so on and so forth

That won't fix the config problem though.

I hope they do support a profile system, something which has been sadly lacking in recent games.

Also, why the hell don't they ever let you name your saves any more? You always have to just use the level name or a time stamp.

OK, I could use separate keyboard configs, but this won't solve the problem of spoiling the story because we see eachother's savegames. For instance, suppose I'm in level 2 and my brother's in level 12 and I decide to play HL2. I would go to the load-game screen and what do I see (I'm raoulduke, my brother's drgonzo)?
Code:
Select savegame
drgonzo - "Robot Dog betrayal part 2"
drgonzo - "Final showdown with Alyx"
drgonzo - "Final showdown with Eli"
drgonzo - "Barney's suicide scene"
drgonzo - "Robot Dog betrayal part 1"
drgonzo - "G-man NWO conspiracy"
drgonzo - "Safer here"
drgonzo - "Welcome, welcome to City 17"
drgonzo - "Wake up, Mr. Freeman"
drgonzo - "Introduction"
raoulduke - "Wake up, Mr. Freeman"
raoulduke - "Introduction"
This would suck - I mean, I don't want to know what happens in the game before I experience it.

Could you get the savegames to be stored in the users seperate folders? I mean, if you're using W2K or XP, you have seperate profiles, each with different desktops, my docs etc. Maybe?

That what Thief 3 does, but Doom3 stores all savegames in the same place, which gave the same problems - spoiling the "story" for one of us. I hope that HL2 supports these user-home-directories, but I'm not counting on it since Steam seams to keep all account info in the same place. If we both use the same account, we're bound to see eachothers savegames since Steam can't distinguish them.

HL2 has a profile system.

It's in the "info from valve" topic.
