Ok, here is my conclusion on what is going on in HL2 and what I believe the Combine are.
A huge World War has just happened... billions of casualties and entire cities leveled. City 17 is basically one of the very few towns left after the World War, and the remaining Government officials alive have decided that the best course of action to insure no further destruction of Earth is to create a Army to wipe anybody that threatens the survival of Earth out. So, what do they do? They create the Combine (Yes, Create). The Combine are genetically enginered (possibly a mix between human/Xen DNA) soldiers that will stop at nothing to insure the survival of Earth. But there is a problem........
The Combine go overboard on insuring the survival of Earth. Before long, they create a giant machine that digs up resources from Earth to create more and more weapons, ammunition, supplies, etc. Not only that, but they are starting to see the citizens of City 17 as a insuperior race that is only slowing their proccess of creating a giant army down. Now comes the aliens...
The remaining Xen creatures that wasn't wiped out in HL see this as an oppurtunity to strike back at Earth. The G-Man realises at this point that something large is about to happen. So he wakes up Gordan from cryogenic stasis. Gordan arrives in City 17 having no idea what the hell is going on, walking around he notices military type soldiers abusing/harrasing citizens. And then it happens, the Xen creatures launch an attack on their homeworld Xen with the Antlions (Something I believe Xen creatures created as a means of a quick fast, blitzkrieg like strike) The Antlions overwhelm the defense of Xen, and start to teleport from Xen to Earth.
And that is it, that is what I believe is what is going on. Of course, I'm probably so far from the truth I couldn't touch it with a 5,000mile long pole. But it's still cool either way
