I have something wrong with my graphics card (apparently) that I can't hear people on screens, nor does my flashlight work.
In Half Life 2, my flashlight didn't work, but I got use to it. Then of coures, Episode One tells you about your flashlight and that, but no, I didn't have one.
Getting into the vent, looking round with a flashlight only shining on certain areas was a major struggle, especially in the "elevator bit" as some people refer it to.
So, at the elevator bit, I took advantage of the light I had already, I read some walkthroughs (hoping to find pictures, but no) and I read about a door thing to be opened, to turn the power on, so I found that before Alyx messed with the elevator. I turned it on after, and headed straight for the elevator killing any zombies I saw.
I was also very tempted to use noclip at the vent bit.

:afro:

So did you manage to get through it. If you did that is a ver impressive feat. Many people with flashlights on get their backsides Pwnt by the zombies. If I remember correctly people found that part so hard that valve ended up tuning down the difficulty.

So kudos to you.

Yeah I did get through. I was so glad I didnt use cheats, and I had a massive sense of relief ending that chapter.

Wow. I have to admit that's pretty impressive stuff and without cheats. That is pretty cool and not just the "elevator bit," you got through the car parks full to the brim with head crabs and zombies. Are you sure you didn't use cheats? :p I remember that whenever my flashlight battery lost all power and zombies were trying to tear me a new belly button I simply ran around in circles. :upstare:

:afro:

Absolutly positive that I did not use cheats. I just wanted to play the entire game after I was waiting for some time. I'm not going to play it again till its actually playable with flashlight etc.

You probably have a crap graphics card, although you still haven't mentioned what type etc it is, even though you seem to be asking for help with it...

Well no. Im not asking for help really. My (future) step-dad works as Head of ICT in his school. When I got the game, it didn't work so I asked him to help. He fixed it, so now I am asking him for help with the flashlight bit.
Also, some areas are in wireframe. At the beginning of the game I was like "WTF!"

Yes, but to help you, we need to know if your card supports things like dynamic shadows that flashlight effects need. For all we know, you have only got a DX7 compatible card. Why are you making it difficult for people to help you, and why have you still not told us what card you have?

And the wireframes - again, it could be your card, so stop being a dickhead and help us to help you.

You don't think I was asking what card you had for fun, do you?

Well at the moment I couldn't tell you as I am at my dad's house. So sorry to dissapoint you.

Yeah, I'm real disappointed that your reluctance to give the basic specs of your PC is preventing you getting help. Oh the humanity. I just won't be able to sleep until I know your problem has been solved. Every second is like an hour.

Don't be such a smart assed dickhead when asking for help.

Heh, I've had that before... the Citadel core was a huge wireframe sphere on my old comp. Most likely it's something to do with your card's supported DirectX level.

that part was actually over with quite quickly with me...people say it's hard but I just hid inside a small shed to the left of the elevator and hid behind crates and blasted anything that came near...as soon as the elevator arrived however a Zombine blew up my makeshift fortress and I was flurried by fast zombies but I made a run for it and WON!

You're assistance when helping people here is truly valued Shasta. Your point is a good one, congratulations. As volatile as octane aren't you?

Perhaps, but when I'm right, I'm right. Besides, it's no fun if they all just made it easy on themselves and just listened to the advice given.

I loved that level. omg, I was so freaked out, when a zombine came up behind me, an dusddenly there was a red blotch, I turn around, and OMFG he's got a grnade in his hand!
The only time I died in that level was the tripwires and all the explodey barrels.. I died a few times then.

I'm not even sure he's asking for help. I think he's trying to prove how manly he is.

Congratulations to the guy, who outtricked VALVe themselves...Meh, incredible to trash the original game mechanics...

The stupid thing was, after I finished Episode One, I looked on the Steam's support site and it told me how to fix the error, but my flashlight would be the one you used in Half Life:

Code:
r_dynamic 1
r_shadows 1
r_newflashlight 0

If only I saw that before Lowlife :sniper:

What? Is it over now with the flashless awesomeness??
Anyhoo, could you explain how someone could POSSIBLY make his way thru lo-life w/out a flashlight??? How did ya find your wai?

My flashlight only shined on certain surfaces. The hardest was getting into that vent right at the beginning (with Alyx telling you the joke).
I could see the corpse and the flare because my light could shine on that, but did I see the drop? No. I carried on, fell, and died.
I spent ages going through it. I just walked forward, and was relieved to get to a lighted area.

To me, I feel this problem that you had really amplifies the essence of Low-Life.

The fact that you fixed it with console commands and NOT the video card should make Shasta look like an overbearing asshole.

Congrats on fixing AND completing the chapter. Did it fix the wireframes, or are you still having that problem?

What? I never said it was the graphics card. I said it was a good place to look, but never said "it is definately your graphics card" because I was waiting for him to give some goddamn specs. No-one makes assumptions on technical problems without knowing what hardware is being used. But then he started getting all shitty, so I didn't bother helping at all.

So again, how was I "wrong" when I never said what his problem was?

Pitz didn't say anything about anyone being wrong, mate. He just called you an overbearing asshole.

...And I take that as him saying I was wrong to say what I did.

I was not.

I am stuck in the garage on the third level and cant get past the spiders to open the gate to get out. Whats the trick to opening the gate without getting completely killed???

Use the cars, gmoore 2847! (To block the antlion burrows.)

Maaayybe, you caaaan plugg da hole!

They's antlions, not spiders! Spiders are wimpy and poisonous!

My friend played through the game without realising you had to plug the hole. > >

Doesn't Alyx tell you to plug those holes? And a lot of times as I remember...

She hints alot, and congratulates you when you do, but she doesn't actually tell you specifically to do so.

Wow shasta... you were being kindof presumptuous on what the dude was saying... http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=118193

if you read that, I think it's obvious, you're just being a dick, and not helping. You have a REALLY short fuse, don't you? You could have a little more patience and read between the lines, for he did say "I don't know" did he not? Don't mean to lecture, I just thought that was kinda silly of you... :/

Reinstalling the game might have helped, or maybe actually finding the graphics card, or going to get a gforce, or a radeon 9800 :dork:

That was my favourite level for atmosphere lol i ran away from the elevator into the darkness and was like shooting zombies until i nearly ran out of ammo because i didn't hear the elevator arrive.

hey its me first post

I suggested all of those things, AND requested more info. What more am I responsible for? If I told you "my car isn't working, please help!!11", you would need to know what was wrong, what type of car, what I had tried etc. Without that sort of info you are just poking at mud. He wanted help, and I told him what info was needed to allow others to best help him. He held onto his specs info like it was the secret of life. His loss.

But I knew what was wrong. It was my graphics card. I don't think my ram would have made any difference to the flashlight or not? (example) Now be quiet and get out of my thread.
