Need help in follow freeman/all striders dead, now what?

Shot down the helo, then went downstairs (ground level) and killed several striders (after a few tries). I'm now walking around with 2 NPCs wondering exactly what was missed? No more striders coming, killed a few combines behind their liquid shields, seems nothing left to do here....but it doesn't end.

Any ideas?

There should be a door or tunnel somewhere. It's behind that gate...

Yeah this took me a while too. Where you killed the combines, there's a set of stairs leading down from the street, tucked back in the left corner behind their energy shields.

I don't remember seeing any stairs. I had to jump out the window of one of the blown out buildings. I heard gunfire and just kinda followed it. Took me forever to find my way out of there.
