Valve recently announced two forthcoming maps for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive in a new blog post over on the game’s website. The first is an updated remake of the classic "Cobble" (de_cbble) map, while the second is an all-new map entitled "Overpass". In the announcement blog post, the team shares some details on the design processes used to create the two new maps.

In remaking the classic Cobble map, the Counter-Strike team set out to maintain its large scale to ensure it remains fun for large numbers of players, while also tweaking the design to accommodate for more intimate 5v5 matches. The blog post notes the decision to add significantly more detail to the map as a means of increasing the opportunity for strategy, making it seem less monotonous, and scaling the whole map down a touch to make it seem less like a "land of giants." The map now also features fewer dark corridors to make it feel less restricted. Additionally, some of the map’s layout has been changed to add more strategic routes, which is a direct reaction to the unavoidable choke points apparent in the original.

In designing the all new Overpass map, the CS team set out to design a large-scale map that is intricately designed for competitive players, yet still open enough to be enjoyed by casual players. In the map, the Counter-Terrorists are tasked with defending a stalled military shipment on a canal overpass while the Terrorists attempt to either attack the shipment directly or destroy it by taking down the overpass. The map is very open and features two main areas: the canal and a public park, both of which were designed with parallel routes in mind to make it interesting, even for veteran players. The team notes that the development of Overpass benefitted greatly from the community feedback and development of Mirage.

Unfortunately, the blog post doesn’t provide any specific details regarding when the maps will be released, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we learn more. To see more pictures and read more about the team’s design decisions, click here for the original blog post.
