What do you guys think? I would have no problem them doing a sequel on the Source engine, but realistically, would they make us wait another 6 years for the new engine? It might not take that long to get a new one going, Doom 3 engine took 4 years.

No, I think they'll use Source 1.5 or sumthin like that.

source was made to be easily upgraded. hell, us CSS beta testers already went through like 4 different versions so far. in theory, it will be upgraded to be on-par with other comparable games when hl3 comes out, and as a bonus, that means hl2 will automatically hav been upgraded using the new source files as well.

Yeah but these days, it'll surely take more time to get a good engine running.
Look at the Unreal3 Engine, if you want to compete with that, starting from scratch, well good luck :)

They said they'd just use Source but updated to fit the technology of that year, or somesuch stuff.

They'll probably upgrade source. It's quite expensive to make an engine.

Heh, imagine VALVe making an entirely new engine after 6 years of work of this engine and then just "flush it down the toilet" in order to make a new one for Half-Life 3. Talk about waste of good engine. :O

Yeah. I'm assuming higher-res textures (something PC Gamer was complaining about) and everything in DX 9 now will be taken for granted is my guess.

They will use source for hl3. They said they will keep updating it. The great thing about source is it could get updated to look like unreal 3.0 over time.

If Valve sticks to Source, HL3 should be available in half the time it took to make HL2, which should be about 3 years. Maybe they will add per-pixel shading and dynamic lighting like in Doom 3?

Well they can still sell the engine to other companies which they will make a lot of money on.

they wil simply mod source.

They have said its expandable..like forever. you can add more lighting effects etc.

I mean look at Bloodlines, they have added a whole new lighing system to the game for their own purposes!
