I was thinking today and my first question is really how and why? How and why did Eli Vance and Isaac Kleiner (along with Breen, everyone we know from HL1, really) did they go from Black Mesa in New Mexico to somewhere like Russia or the Ukriane. Gordon and his stasis, the G-Man can put him anywhere, but what happened to everyone and why did they move half way around the world? Normally I would have an idea and opinion about theories like this but I've not really an idea at all.

I didn't see another thread like this one, so if there is already, sorry, redirect me.

The Combine likes to move people around every now-and-then to keep the public confused and not have any real sense of "roots." Shuffle the public around, move them from city to city...that explains how most people got there.

As to how and why Kleiner and Vance went, it might've had something to do with Breen's occupation of the city...you know, "keep your enemy close." We don't know when Breen took up residence there but we know that Isaac and Eli have been there for quite a long time...maybe even close to the full two decades between HL and HL2. We also know that they didn't get in by the "relocation ticket" method...they broke in to City 17, going over a wall. So whatever the reason for their being there, it was important.

As for Barney, he didn't travel with Dr. Kleiner or Dr. Vance, but rather escaped BMRF after before the portal storms with some other scientists. They might've let him know where the bulk of the resistance was forming and/or led him to Dr. Kleiner. He might've also gotten there by city shuffle...we don't know when he became a metrocop and we don't know if metrocops are moved from city to city like normal citizens, but he might've been relocated as a matter of coincidence, whether as a civvie or as part of his job as a metrocop.

Oh, and Breen was there just because he liked the way City 17 looked.

They had 20 years. They could have travelled on space hoppers or pogo sticks. They probably followed Breen. If Breen went during the portal storms before Combine occupation, he would have been nearly as easy to follow as it currently is in this day and age, if not, well they could have still moved around the world easy enough by getting moved by the combine or using a ship or plane in their own use such as the Borealis (assuming it exists).
