New phone decisions...*sigh*

So, my old phone broke. :hmph: Just stopped working, I guess it's just wore out from age and stuff. Anyway, I've been trying to decide on which new phone to get (I'm on AT&T) and after a while of searching through stuff, I'm stuck deciding between the Nokia E71x and the iPhone 3GS 16GB.

Anybody have any recommendations on which one I should buy? Any current users of those 2 phones?

Also...if I go to the ATT store anytime soon, should I just say my phone is "lost" so I can get a new phone for less?

I thought that if you said your phone was lost or stolen they could terminate the line or whatever for free. Never checked about it being broken...but saying it's broken probably is a better idea.

Btw, how is the battery on the 3GS?

I really don't care for HTC phones, I really don't know why. And I'm not a patient person..well, expect for the time I waited 7 hours in line to get the iPhone 3G the day it came out. (Don't have it anymore)

But, other than that, I just really don't like HTC phones.

Well aside from your unexplained anger at HTC, if you waited 7 hours for an Iphone why not just get another one and and enjoy.

Kind of depends on your needs, if I had to guess your needs I would say go with the iPhone. The support for different apps and the constant updates is unmatched by anyone else. For me personally I am really falling in love with the blackberry. I just got a used blackberry thats a couple years old to hold me over a few months before I sign a new contract and this thing is absolutely awesome for business use. The application support on the blackberry is also very good but the fact it has keyboards, very smart shortcuts, copy and paste, and very powerful email makes it more ideal to me than the iPhone so when I decide I wanna get back on a contract again I might end up going that route.

My "needs" or what I want in a phone are:
-Good Internet Browsing
-YouTube (With decent/good quality)
-Good E-mail
-Keyboard is easy to use (once you get used to it)
-Good Functionality

you actually dont even have to go to the apple store. the att stores in my area sell iPhones.

The only ATT store near me is a really small one, idk if they sell iPhones.

I'll probably just head to the mall, they have an Apple Store and ATT Kiosk.

just say you want a new phone, they dont give a **** about your lost phone unfortunately.

They're probably the same people who have the phone's brightness turned way up with location services, wi-fi, bluetooth, and mail push all on. And can't do that much? Sounds like a bunch of iPhone-haters to me. With a jailbroken iPhone, there's really nothing it can't do. Why don't you go into an AT&T/Apple store and touch one, play with it and see for yourself if it's the right phone for you.

iPhone lasts about 2 days with a complete full charge and medium use. Droid is about the same, 2.5-3 days max. Nexus 1 is bound to be the same, and it's build quality is phenomenal, however, you have to deal with T-Mobile, and they're awful and no one knows when or if AT&T will get it. Verizon is going to get the Nexus 1 in Spring.

AT&T doesn't have any other good phones at the moment other than the iPhone. They're going to get about 10 Android handsets this year, but the iPhone 4G will be out by then and will already be better than the others more than likely.

Honestly, the iPhone can do basically whatever you want. It has all the apps you need, you can jailbreak it to add functionality. It's a great phone no doubt, but it all depends if you want to go back to an iPhone.

If not, then I suggest you go to another carrier such as VZW. They have the Droid and are supposed to be getting another Motorola Android phone and a brilliant HTC device. Also, with Android, you can customize the hell out of it and also put roms from other phones on it such as the Nexus 1. It has Android 2.1 on it, and you can put that rom onto the Droid or whatever device you get.

Anyway, just get the iPhone if you're impatient. My 2 cents.

They told me it was overpriced, it's functionality is limited, and you pay for more than what you get.

You're saying 'they' said the functionality of the iPhone is limited? Hahahaha... I'm not going to lie. The iPhone jailbroken.... even unjailbroken with the App Store, has so much damn functionality. It easily is the most 'full' phone, and I say that because the commercials are true. There is literally any kind of application you want. It has everything. Plus, once you jailbreak it, you can add a few features any other smart phone has. Backgrounding? Sure! Multitasking? Why not!

Anyway, the Android OS doesn't need rooted to do any multitasking or anything of the sort. It already has the functionality of the iPhone except you don't get the App Store which isn't a large deal because the applications in there are actually useful. Yes, there are a few that are 'OMG LOL FART APP', but I think it was Gizmodo or Engadget who showed that the App Store has an incredibly low ratio of good applications to terrible ones.

Even though you hear people talk about how awful the App Store approval process is, they don't tell you how damn easy it is to get approved for shitty applications. They won't allow anything that mimics the functionality of a certain feature, however, they've been trying to change that as of late. They will let almost any kind of application in there now which is pitiful as they don't even bother to check for any kind of quality. It's just a clutter **** of undiluted shit.

That's neither here nor there though. In the end, it comes down to personal preference of the operating system. No one has told you to get the Nokia because, and I'm just going to be completely honest, the phone is complete garbage when you compare it to any smart phone. It has no application store. It has a horrible operating system. You'll be paying the same amount for your plan as you would an iPhone or any other smart phone for that matter, and you'll be getting... so many less features.


Anyway, if you are staying on AT&T, then your best bet right now is the iPhone 3GS. None of the other phones on the network are as good. When the Android phones with a Snapdragon processor in there start arriving, I'd say go with them instantly.




TL;DR: iPhone is your best bet.

I have the E71, and the phone itself is really nice, sleek design, very thing at also solid as a brick, and the keyboard is one of the best in the form factor, but as a smartphone it doesn't even compare to more recent devices - the base firmware and services are really really outdated. Nokia have now really fallen behind on almost every aspect apart from hardware design, while Apple, Android and Palm have raced so far ahead that they're only competing with each other, not Nokia.
I'd only recommend it if you're adamant about having a keyboard - but even then there's better choices, such as the Motorola Droid. Only other positives are that it's quite cheap (I got it for free on a cheap contract) and it's nearly indestructible. Oh and you're able to use it as a modem, depending on your network, which isn't an option on an un-jailbroken iPhone.

TLDR: Don't bother. But if I've not convinced you to forget about the E71, you should see if you can find the E72 - next OS version (still relatively crap though), better camera, and I think a compass.
