I have never played this type of game and don't even know how to start. I've installed without a problem and can move around in the train station but that's about it.
My typical game is Civ III, RON or AOE. Much different than this. I guess my question is What next? I didn't see any readme's or help files on the FIVE cd's so I'm not sure what I'm expect to do?

I'm assuming you know the basic's (WSAD to walk around, Mouse to look etc)

The train station is fairly straight forward, follow it around, through the turnstile, until you reach a fenced area, as soon as you get through the gate, the story starts to pick up.

The areas are extremely linear, so you should never have serious doubts of where to go next. Especially inside the train-station, there is no need to do anything else, than to follow pre-determined routes.

Basically in this type of game you run into the guys with blue glowing lollipops, and wait for them to give them to you... It takes a lot of ramming.

Then after that, and on the more serious side of fps gameplay:

You get weapons, kill stuff, move onto next area, kill more, get better gun, kill more, go further, etc etc

The added bonus with hl2 is that there is actually a nice storyline, and the game (although linear) is very addictive, fun, enjoyable, and well pretty much everyone here could go on for hours talking about it.

My advice: play the game on easy.

Act like you would in real life: cover when the enemy is shooting, use grenades, etc.

I am shocked and amazed.
You must have never played Nintendo or something. Even SNES had some FPSs.

HL2 is what's known as a "platformer" in "first-person perspective".

You run and jump and bash your way to complete the objective and get to the next level, or in this case checkpoint.
Standard fare gameplay for the past 20 or so years.
