alright, this is gonna make me look like an idiot, but oh well...

i just picked up the game, i played the hell out of the first one but really haven't been too into it for a couple of years, and i was just curious if i could get this runnin' on vista or if i need to swap out my OS for XP or somethin' else... and hey, like i said... i'm not a computer retard, i'm actually a net admin in the marine corps, so i'm not stupid... i've just been out of the gaming picture for a while...

I don't know if hl1 will run on vista, but I'm guessing it will, since there are many vista users on steam.

Which game have you picked up, just Half-life? All your Valve games should be registered through a programme called 'Steam'. You have an account on Steam, which consists of a username or email as the account name. If you've never created one, create the account now and register your CD Key with the account.

Steam will download Half-life for you and fully patch the game without you needing to do anything difficult. Steam is fully compatible on Windows Vista too, and so supports Half-life and all other Steam games.

well its possible he might have an old on steam copy of the game.. im sure I will run just fine in vista.. especially if your using the 32bit copy of vista.. the 64bit copy some times has issues with 32bit programs I've heard.. but its usually maybe 1 outta 10 programs that have any kind of issues.

Steam alert - if you aren't already running Steam (and will be running it for the first time shortly), it will take more time than you think it will need to, to do the updates. Let it run through this process before trying to play, or your first experience with the new game may be less than optimal.

Valve alert - if you haven't been exposed to a lot of the story/game nuances of the Half Life 2 series of games, stay away from spoilers; you're in for a real treat.

Welcome to the forums.
