hi got a some simple questions i hope someone can answer

i got half life 2 a while ago played it then i lent the cd and my steam account to my little brother who's a CS freak.
So recently i asked him to hand back the cds and my account so he looks around for the cds for 5 minutes, gives up looking and tells me its just 'lost'

so my question is having already bought the game can i just install steam on my computer and be able to download all the content online (HL2, CS:S) and play it withought the cds or am i gonna have to go get another copy to be able to play HL2 again.

Thanks for any answers

Yeah, you can do that, as long as you have the original Steam account that you installed it on (which it sounds like you do).

Negative. You shouldn't have uninstalled HL2. You will need the play disc as well.

That's if you don't want to pay a DL fee.

It shouldn't do, no.

If he doesn't have anything installed, he won't be able to just DL HL2. It costs 39.99.

Installing Steam doesn't give you automatic rights to any games because there are various versions, some that don't come with HL2.

He needs the original CDs.

I guess I would know less than everyone about this, but this seems logical.

not really sure about that but one thing i know by reading around:

since ive already bought the game and in punched in the cd key it means that it's bound to that account (not really sure what you mean by different versions and all that) the version i had bought came with HL2 and CSS

so i just Downloaded steam and logged on and all the games show up as not installed i simply clicked on HL2 then clicked on 'install game' and it starts downloading. (of course i stopped the download since its not the machine i want the game installed on) but once i get home ill be dowloading and playing i guess

the only thing im afraid of now is after downloading the whole game off steam and i go to start it up that it will require the CD in disk drive to play the game (like most any game out there these day)

So you have the CD key, without the CD?

From where did you install Steam? Download?

I downloaded HL2:DM in the way you are describing. Actually sort of by accident after installing Garry's mod, but I don't see where you got the CD key. Mine is on a CD envelope with the disc. :/

I'm wondering now if it's possible you don't need a key, but just your login info?

you see i bought it when HL2 first came out so i punched in the cd key back then and the key is bound to that account and you never have to use it again as long as you have that account

but my problem isnt the cd key but not having the CDs and after reading a bit more i think that retail copies of HL2 must have the disk in the dive to play so i guess im screwed

I understand now. I didn't realize the key was bound to the login.

It seems to me, you have to have an original HL2 or DoD disc to play HL2 even after a full game DL, but unless someone who has done this chimes in, you'll just have to wait and see.

In the meantime, go find that play disc.

Once you put in a CD-Key for a Steam game, that game is bound to your account. You do not need the CDs for the game at all, as you can download that game through Steam. Steam recognises what games individual accounts has activated and responds accordingly. You can login with your Steam account, double-click on HL2 in the My Games list, let it download then play to your heart's content.

You don't need a play disc either.

wth are you all talking about??? you dont need the cds to play the game, nor do you need the cd key once its bound to the account. all you do is log in to your steam account and dl the game then play no cds needed. the only need for the cds is if you dont want to wait about 2 hrs for it to download or you have a slow connection

If you have registerd your product you could just dowload it.
Or just borrow a friends CD and install it.

REALLY? sweet thanks

(only reason i said you need the CD is cause it was on the valve support pages but i guess its out of date)
